    About A Free Bird

A Free Bird is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in New York City. We empower children and teens diagnosed with cancer to explore their artistic passions—whether through art, music, writing, acting, or other creative mediums. Creativity fuels healing, resilience, and hope, and our volunteers play a vital role in delivering that mission.

As a fully remote nonprofit, we rely on passionate, skilled leaders to help strengthen our internal operations and support the growing number of volunteers who make our work possible.

    Role Overview

The HR Manager is a critical leadership role at A Free Bird. You will oversee volunteer recruitment, onboarding, engagement, and retention while ensuring HR operations run smoothly across departments. This role is perfect for someone with prior HR or people-management experience who is organized, proactive, and excited to build strong, mission-driven teams.

You will collaborate closely with the HR Director, department leads, and the President to support organizational growth and ensure a positive volunteer experience from start to finish.

    Key Responsibilities

    Recruitment & Onboarding

    • Manage the full recruitment cycle: posting roles, screening applications, scheduling interviews, and assisting department leads with final selection.
    • Coordinate onboarding and orientation for new volunteers, ensuring they receive all required documentation and training materials.
    • Maintain recruitment pipelines, HR dashboards, and applicant tracking spreadsheets.

    Volunteer Management & Support

    • Oversee volunteer performance, engagement, and retention across multiple departments.
    • Conduct periodic check-ins with volunteers and department leads to identify needs and resolve issues promptly.
    • Assist with conflict resolution, team communication, and coaching when needed.

    HR Operations

    • Maintain accurate records, including volunteer status, tenure, evaluations, and compliance documentation.
    • Update and enforce HR policies, protocols, and SOPs.
    • Track HR metrics such as applications received, placements, attrition, and tenure completion.
    • Support organization-wide training initiatives and help develop learning materials (with the support of the LxD/Training team).

    Collaboration & Strategy

    • Work closely with leadership to identify staffing needs and improve recruitment strategies.
    • Provide insights and recommendations to enhance volunteer engagement, workflow, and organizational culture.
    • Lead or support HR projects focused on efficiency, retention, digital transformation, and department growth.

    Skills & Qualifications

    • 1–2+ years of HR management, people operations, or team leadership experience (volunteer or professional).
    • Strong understanding of recruitment processes, onboarding best practices, and HR documentation.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills — patient, empathetic, and professional.
    • Highly organized with strong time-management abilities.
    • Comfortable working remotely and managing HR operations digitally.
    • Proficiency in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and basic HR tools (ATS, spreadsheets, forms, etc.)
    • Ability to stay calm under pressure, multitask, and adapt to a fast-moving nonprofit environment.
    • Passion for supporting a mission that empowers young artists on their healing journey.
