    Gillespie Center Director

    FUNCTION: The Director oversees the coordination and administration of all programs, activities, and services of The Gillespie Center to promote the educational, cultural, social, physical, and psychological needs of the members and community.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

      1. Work with the Board of Directors to identify, plan, develop, coordinate, and publicize detailed and comprehensive programs and activities for use in the Gillespie Center. This would include special programs, as needed.
      2. Develop public relations programs to promote center activities.
      3. Track all monies coming in and going out. Supply input to the Board of Directors on budgetary needs; apply for grants from State, Federal, and/or private sources.
      4. Supervise and train volunteers.
      5. Contact health and social agencies to provide health and related referrals as needed. Maintain rapport with other community groups and agencies to enhance programs and activities.
      6. Work with Marketing Consultant to prepare monthly newsletter and prepare public service announcements, press releases, and brochures as needed.
      7. May coordinate and attend fundraisers if needed and attend Board of Finance meetings.
      8. Work with the Executive Committee to prepare a monthly report dealing with all aspects of the Center. Attend Board of Directors meetings.

    OVERSIGHT OF THE FOLLOWING:

    • Volunteer recruitment and training.
    • Membership database (currently MemberTies)
    • Connecting new members to their shared area of interest.
    • Work with the Rental Coordinator as needed for rentals.
    • Ensures compliance with all federal, state, local, and department laws, regulations, and requirements.
    • Ensure that the food preparation kitchen and equipment is in good working order.
    • Building/facilities operations such as repairs, janitorial maintenance, security, and safety issues; reports need for repairs and follows-up on services.
    • Activities/programs.
    • Center complaints, recommends remedial action if required; ensures the quality and consistency of programs and events.
    • Weekly/bi-weekly meeting and/or reporting to the Board of Directors President.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

    • Office suite computer skills; reports, spreadsheets, presentations
    • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, the principles and practices needed to effectively administer senior programs.
    • Ability to plan, coordinate, and direct programs.
    • Ability to effectively relate to a variety of people, particularly the aged, and to encourage their participation in activities.
    • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, federal, state, and regional programs available to the aged population.
    • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, psychological, social and health needs of the aged.
    • Ability to prepare effective narrative and statistical reports.
    • Ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing.
    • Ability to administer and budget.
    • Ability to use computer software to design and publish newsletter and other materials.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Qualified Food Operator’s license helpful.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    The physical demands described here are representative of required physical demands to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the Director is often needed to: speak; hear; walk; sit; stand, bend; stoop, crouch, and climb stairs. Additionally, the ability to lift, up to 25 pounds, daily.

    The Director must be able to work independently as well as, cooperatively with others (such as Board members, Gillespie members, vendors, etc.). Must be able to interact with people who are under physical and emotional stress as well as the ability to maintain a calm manner in stressful and emergency situations. Must be able to respond in a timely and professional manner in demanding situations.

    POSITION DESCRIPTION MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and Experience

    • Education level: 1-3 years of college level coursework and experience in the supervision of group activities, with an emphasis on senior activities
    • Education or experience in one of the following fields is preferred: gerontology, counseling, psychology, or social work, but is less important than proven skills and abilities, genuine caring for the elderly, sensitivity to their needs, and the willingness to learn and to seek out resources. OR • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which demonstrates ability to perform the duties of the position.
    • Experience in office and budget administration and computer usage.
    • Criminal background check is required prior to employment.
