Make an Impact. Build a Brand. Tell Stories That Matter.
Are you passionate about public relations, media, storytelling, and building meaningful connections?
We’re looking for a creative and driven Public Relations & Media Manager to help shape how our organization shows up in the world.
This is more than an opportunity to support PR activities. You’ll have the chance to help build our public relations and media function, develop relationships with media and external partners, uncover compelling stories, and create opportunities that expand awareness of our mission and impact.
For someone looking to grow their PR portfolio, gain hands-on leadership experience, expand their professional network, or use their communications expertise for a meaningful mission, this role offers the opportunity to make a visible contribution.
What You’ll Get to Do
Help Build Our PR & Media Presence
You’ll have the opportunity to help shape how we approach public relations as the organization grows.
- Help develop and execute our PR and media relations strategy.
- Build and maintain media lists, outreach plans, PR calendars, and communication resources.
- Identify opportunities to increase awareness of our organization, programs, partnerships, and impact.
- Help establish scalable PR processes, tools, templates, and best practices.
- Bring new ideas for how we can expand our visibility and reach.
Tell Stories That Matter
Every organization has stories. You’ll help us find and tell ours.
- Identify compelling stories about our programs, volunteers, participants, partnerships, milestones, and community impact.
- Develop press releases, media pitches, announcements, talking points, and other external communications.
- Turn organizational updates into stories that are interesting, authentic, and relevant to external audiences.
- Collaborate with Marketing, Creative, Programs, and leadership to uncover new storytelling opportunities.
Build Media Relationships
Help us create relationships that expand our voice and reach.
- Research and connect with journalists, editors, producers, podcasters, bloggers, influencers, and other relevant media contacts.
- Develop targeted media pitches and story ideas.
- Coordinate media inquiries, interviews, and follow-up communications.
- Identify opportunities for features, interviews, podcasts, speaking engagements, panels, and other media exposure.
- Maintain and grow our media contact database.
Support Thought Leadership
Help position our leaders and subject-matter experts as voices within the communities and areas we serve.
- Identify opportunities for thought leadership and executive visibility.
- Develop talking points, interview briefs, articles, quotes, and executive messaging.
- Help prepare organizational leaders for interviews, podcasts, panels, and public appearances.
- Research emerging conversations and trends where our organization can meaningfully contribute.
Protect & Strengthen Our Reputation
- Monitor relevant media coverage and public conversations.
- Help identify emerging communications opportunities and potential reputational risks.
- Support the development of FAQs, media statements, messaging, and crisis communication materials.
- Help ensure external communications are consistent, professional, accurate, and aligned with our mission and values.
What You Bring
We’re interested in people with both professional experience and emerging talent. You do not need to check every box to make an impact in this role.
Ideally, you bring:
- Experience or education in public relations, communications, journalism, media, marketing, or a related field.
- Strong writing, editing, storytelling, and verbal communication skills.
- An understanding of media relations and what makes a compelling story.
- The ability to research journalists, publications, podcasts, and other media opportunities.
- Strong relationship-building and interpersonal skills.
- Creativity, curiosity, and the confidence to bring forward new ideas.
- Strong organization and follow-through.
- Sound judgment when handling sensitive or confidential information.
- Comfort working independently while collaborating across multiple teams.
- A willingness to build, experiment, improve, and create—not simply maintain existing processes.
Experience with press releases, media pitching, executive communications, media monitoring, or crisis communications is a plus, but not required for every candidate.
Who Would Thrive in This Role?
You may be a PR or communications professional looking to give back and use your expertise for a meaningful mission.
You may be an emerging communications professional looking for the opportunity to build substantive, hands-on experience and a stronger portfolio.
You may be returning to the workforce, transitioning careers, or looking to expand into PR and media relations.
Or you may simply be someone who sees a great story and immediately starts thinking:
“More people need to know about this.”
If that sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you.
Why Volunteer With Us?
This role provides an opportunity to do meaningful work while developing experience that can strengthen your professional portfolio and career.
You’ll have the opportunity to:
- Help build a PR and media function from the ground up.
- Take ownership of meaningful projects rather than simply observing from the sidelines.
- Develop real-world PR, communications, and media relations experience.
- Create work that can strengthen your professional portfolio.
- Gain experience working with organizational and executive leadership.
- Develop media outreach and relationship-building experience.
- Collaborate with professionals across Marketing, Creative, Programs, Operations, and other functions.
- Expand your professional network.
- Bring your own ideas and help shape how the organization communicates externally.
- Make a visible contribution to a mission-driven organization.
