Finance Board Trustee

Overview

Social Creatures is seeking a Trustee to join its Board of Directors and serve on the Finance Committee. This Trustee will bring demonstrated expertise in nonprofit accounting, financial reporting, and financial governance to support the organization’s continued growth and increasing financial complexity.

As Social Creatures expands its restricted funding portfolio, subaward management, and audit-readiness efforts, the Board seeks a Trustee with prior experience in nonprofit financial oversight to strengthen internal controls, compliance practices, and financial transparency. Board and Committee Participation

In support of the organization’s mission and as a fiduciary steward of its resources, the Finance Trustee will:

• Prepare for and attend more than three quarters of Full Board meetings (4-5 per year; typically 2 in-person and the remainder via Zoom)
• Serve as an active member of the Finance Committee (3–4 meetings per year, virtual)
• Review quarterly financial statements and cash position reports in advance of meetings
• Contribute financial insight to Board deliberations in a way that strengthens oversight without crossing into management

Finance Committee Responsibilities

The Finance Trustee will help the Board:

• Strengthen financial governance and internal controls
• Oversee accounting policies, financial reporting practices, and compliance procedures
• Review and assess key financial issues, including revenue recognition, restricted funding treatment, and cost allocation
• Support audit readiness and Form 990 oversight
• Monitor progress against the annual operating budget
• Ensure financial practices remain scalable as the organization grows

Desired Qualifications

We are particularly seeking candidates with:

• Prior experience in nonprofit accounting, auditing, or financial management
• Familiarity with nonprofit financial statements (Statement of Activities, Statement of Financial Position, cash flow)
• Experience working with restricted grants, subawards, or foundation funding
• Understanding of nonprofit compliance requirements (Form 990, internal controls, conflict of interest policies)
• CPA designation preferred but not required
• Experience serving on a nonprofit finance or audit committee preferred

Importantly, this is not a Treasurer role, but a Trustee position with meaningful Finance Committee engagement.

Philanthropic Engagement

All Trustees of Social Creatures are expected to:

• Make an annual, personally meaningful financial contribution, with Social Creatures among their top 2-3 philanthropic commitments
• Support fundraising efforts by identifying, cultivating, or introducing potential donors or partners
• Serve as an ambassador for Social Creatures’ mission and values
