We are currently only accepting candidates with OPT F1 Status.
We are expanding our use of Artificial Intelligence across many areas of our organization and have a growing team of volunteer AI programmers, developers, analysts, and other technology professionals working on multiple AI projects.
We are seeking an experienced and highly organized Volunteer Director of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to provide leadership, technical oversight, accountability, and quality control for these projects and the volunteers working on them.
Position Overview
The Volunteer Director of Artificial Intelligence (AI) will oversee the progress and results of our volunteer AI programmers and AI project teams. You will be working directly with our CEO and our Director of Business Development.
A major responsibility of this position is to review and inspect the work of our AI programmers every week to determine what has actually been accomplished, whether projects are progressing according to plan, whether the work is functioning properly, and what needs to happen next.
This is not simply a project-management position. The Director must have enough hands-on technical knowledge of AI and software development to independently evaluate the work being performed by our programmers.
The Director will help ensure that our AI volunteers are producing measurable results and that projects move from ideas and prototypes into working systems that provide real value to MatchingDonors.com.
Key Responsibilities
Weekly AI Programmer Oversight
- Review the work and progress of our volunteer AI programmers every week.
- Meet with individual programmers and project teams as necessary to review their work.
- Inspect demonstrations, applications, code, prototypes, AI systems, integrations, reports, and other deliverables.
- Compare actual accomplishments against each volunteer's assigned responsibilities, goals, and deadlines.
- Determine whether reported work has actually been completed and is functioning as intended.
- Identify programmers or projects that are falling behind schedule.
- Identify technical problems, roadblocks, duplicated work, and projects that need additional assistance.
- Make sure programmers have clear assignments and measurable objectives for the following week.
AI Project Leadership
- Provide technical and strategic leadership across MatchingDonors.com's AI initiatives.
- Help evaluate proposed AI projects before significant development time is committed.
- Determine which AI projects have the greatest potential benefit to the organization.
- Establish realistic project milestones, deliverables, priorities, and deadlines.
- Coordinate work among programmers so multiple volunteers are not unknowingly developing the same systems or features.
- Help move successful prototypes into reliable, usable systems.
- Recommend when projects should be expanded, modified, reassigned, consolidated, or discontinued.
Technical Review & Quality Control
The Director must be technically knowledgeable enough to determine whether AI projects are genuinely progressing rather than relying solely on programmers' status reports.
Responsibilities include:
- Reviewing AI architecture and technical approaches.
- Reviewing source code and development progress when appropriate.
- Evaluating AI models, APIs, agents, automations, workflows, databases, and integrations.
- Testing AI applications and prototypes.
- Evaluating accuracy, reliability, scalability, security, and performance.
- Identifying technical weaknesses before systems are deployed.
- Ensuring appropriate documentation exists so projects can be maintained by other programmers.
- Evaluating whether AI is actually the appropriate solution for a proposed problem.
Weekly AI Progress Review
The Director will establish and manage a consistent weekly review process for all AI programmers.
Each programmer or project team should be able to demonstrate:
- What they were assigned to accomplish.
- What they actually completed during the week.
- A demonstration or other evidence of the work completed whenever applicable.
- Any problems or technical roadblocks encountered.
- Measurable results produced by the project.
- What remains incomplete.
- What they will accomplish during the following week.
The Director will independently evaluate this information rather than simply collecting status reports.
Weekly Management Report
The Director will provide management with a concise weekly overview of the entire AI program, including:
- Projects currently being developed.
- Volunteers assigned to each project.
- Progress made during the previous week.
- Major accomplishments and completed milestones.
- Projects that are on schedule.
- Projects that are behind schedule.
- Technical or organizational problems requiring attention.
- Volunteers who may require additional assistance or direction.
- Projects producing particularly strong results.
- Recommended priorities for the following week.
The goal is to give management a clear understanding of what our AI programmers are working on, what has actually been accomplished, and whether our AI projects are producing meaningful results.
Required Qualifications
Candidates should have strong knowledge and practical experience in several of the following areas:
- Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
- Generative AI and Large Language Models
- AI agents and AI automation
- Prompt engineering
- AI APIs and integrations
- Python and/or other programming languages
- Software development
- Application architecture
- Databases and data integration
- API development
- Cloud-based applications
- Git/GitHub or similar development environments
- Testing, debugging, and technical quality assurance
- AI security, privacy, and responsible AI practices
Leadership Qualifications
The ideal candidate will also have:
- Experience leading programmers, developers, engineers, or technical teams.
- Strong project-management and organizational abilities.
- The ability to evaluate technical work independently.
- The ability to hold multiple teams accountable for deadlines and deliverables.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to explain complicated technical issues to nontechnical management.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- The confidence to challenge technical assumptions and ask programmers to demonstrate their results.
- The ability to manage multiple AI projects simultaneously.
