Budget Planning Associate (Volunteer)
Organization: A Free Bird | 501(c)(3) Nonprofit
Location: Remote (NYC preferred)
Commitment: 5–10 hours per week | Minimum over 3-month commitment

A Free Bird is a New York City–based nonprofit dedicated to empowering children diagnosed with cancer through artistic expression. Through creative programs in art, music, writing, and more, we help children build confidence, process emotions, and find strength during their journey.
Position Overview
The Budget Planning Associate plays a key role in supporting the organization’s financial planning and operational efficiency. This position focuses on analyzing budgets, monitoring financial performance, and identifying opportunities to improve resource allocation across departments.
You will work cross-functionally with leadership and various teams to ensure budgets align with organizational goals and that resources are being used effectively to support A Free Bird’s mission.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the development and maintenance of quarterly and annual budgets
- Analyze departmental budgets and operational spending to identify inefficiencies
- Track budget performance and provide regular updates and reports to leadership
- Collaborate with departments to forecast financial needs and allocate resources effectively
- Evaluate internal financial processes and recommend improvements
- Support the preparation of financial and operational reports
- Conduct research on budgeting best practices and apply findings to organizational strategy
- Assist in building and improving budget tracking systems and tools
- Contribute to financial planning discussions and strategic decision-making
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field
- 1–2+ years of experience in budgeting, financial planning, operations, or a related field
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data and trends
- Understanding of budgeting processes, forecasting, and resource allocation
- Ability to identify inefficiencies and recommend actionable solutions
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience with Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or similar tools
- Familiarity with CRM or financial systems (Salesforce a plus)
Additional Information
- Minimum three-month commitment required
- 5–10 hours per week (based on role level)
- Fully remote position
- Must have access to a computer and reliable internet
- Availability for periodic phone or video meetings required
