    Mentors Needed (3-8th Grade)

Mentoring is the cornerstone of our organization. As a mentor, or "Big Sib," you will develop a one-on-one relationship with a child in 3-8th grade, and support in expanding their social network.

By providing consistency and serving as a positive role model in students’ lives, research has shown that students paired with a mentor are 55% more likely to enroll in college. As a Big Sib at Horizons for Youth, you are a primary source of support for a student in our program and have the opportunity to develop a lasting relationship with the child and the entire family.

    Our ask:

    • Build a consistent, caring relationship with a student in grades 3-8
    • Connect at least twice a month-virtually or through fun, organized in-person events
    • Be a steady presence and support system as your student grows academically and personally
    • Come with compassion, curiosity, and a willingness to learn alongside your mentee
    • All volunteers will be required to undergo a background check as a part of their onboarding process.

Benefits for You as a Mentor:

    1) Build a meaningful relationship that broadens your perspective

Mentorship connects you with a young person whose life experiences may be very different from your own — creating space for mutual learning, empathy, and a relationship you likely wouldn’t encounter otherwise.

    2) Be part of Chicago’s social fabric in a tangible way

Rather than giving back from a distance, you become directly connected to the city’s communities, schools, and families — contributing to the future of Chicago in a personal, lasting way.

    3) Experience the city through unique opportunities

Mentors and students participate together in enriching activities — from museum visits and cultural outings to fun experiences like pickleball — making it a rewarding way to explore Chicago while supporting a student.

    4) Grow personally and professionally

Mentorship strengthens communication, leadership, and listening skills while offering a powerful sense of purpose. Many mentors report that they receive just as much from the experience as they give.
