Position Overview:
Surmount New York is seeking dedicated volunteers to support our 2026 Peanut Butter & Jelly (PB&J) Drive by serving as Student Leader Training Facilitators. Volunteers in this role will guide weekly 45 minute training sessions for student leaders for 5 weeks, providing mentorship, resources, and support to help them successfully lead PB&J collection efforts in their schools. Facilitators will also maintain ongoing relationships with student leaders throughout the program period.
Key Responsibilities
Student Training Hosting & Facilitation
- Lead and facilitate Surmount’s student leadership training sessions at assigned schools.
- Engage students with clear instruction, enthusiasm, and patience to create a supportive learning space.
- Guide students through activities, discussions, and skill-building exercises.
- Serve as a positive mentor and role model aligned with Surmount’s mission and values.
Program Coordination & Logistics
- Confirm dates with school partners.
- Prepare and distribute training materials, handouts, and supplies.
- Coordinate set-up and clean-up before and after training events.
Volunteer & School Partner Communication
- Serve as Surmount’s on-site point of contact for each training session.
- Maintain clear and responsive communication with teachers, school staff, and Surmount program leads.
- Report any concerns, challenges, or student needs to the Program Director in a timely manner.
Data Collection & Reporting
- Document session outcomes, student engagement, and feedback.
- Submit short summaries and updates to the Program Coordinator each training.
- Support evaluation efforts to help Surmount improve and refine student programs.
Experience & Qualifications
- Passion for youth development, community engagement, or education.
- Strong communication, public speaking, and facilitation skills.
- Reliable, punctual, and comfortable leading groups of students.
- Ability to follow structured curriculum while creating an engaging atmosphere.
- Experience working with youth (preferred but not required).
- Ability to travel to assigned school locations in Yonkers, the Bronx, or Manhattan (you will only be assigned one).

- Willing to undergo a background check and other safety requirements the partner school dictates
Time Commitment
This volunteer role typically requires up to 5 hours per week, depending on training schedules and school needs. Availability during school hours is preferred. Training starts in January 2026, then you lead student training In Feb - March, the drive is from March - April.
