Power of Produce (POP) Club was started by Oregon City Farmers Market in 2010. Studies have shown that exposing kids to more foods at a younger age creates a solid foundation for healthy eating habits throughout their lives. Montavilla Farmers Market is working to help make this a reality for our youngest community members. All ages are welcome to our booth at each market to try a new local vegetable item being sold at that week’s market. For their bravery, kiddos ages 2-12 receive a $3 market coupon to spend on any fruits or vegetables!
POP Club offers two volunteer shifts at every market: 9:45-12 and from 12-2:15. The morning volunteer is responsible for selecting and preparing the food that will be tasted that day (with the support of and purchase by market staff), and offering up taste-tests to children during market hours from 10am-12pm. The market provides a workstation with a knife, cutting board, and camp stove for cooking. The afternoon shift is responsible for running taste tests from 12pm-2pm and cleaning all tools and utensils used following the market. Both shifts require standing outside in all kinds of weather, chatting with kids, and engaging with the general public. Cooking skills, food safety knowledge, and familiarity with local produce are a major plus!
Volunteer shifts happen on market days which are every other Sunday through April (Mar. 2, 16, and 30, April 13 and 27) at the Montavilla market located at 7700 SE Stark.
