Northstar Tutoring’s mission is to help low-income and underserved K-12th grade students in the D.C. area reach their full potential by overcoming barriers to personal and academic success. By pairing each student with a dedicated volunteer tutor and mentor, Northstar strives to provide the free academic support and personal attention that many of these students would not otherwise have access to.
At Northstar’s Oxon Hill Middle School location, located at 9570 Fort Foote Road in Fort Washington, MD, tutoring sessions are held every Monday and Wednesday from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. Most volunteers choose to commit to one day a week, but those who are able are welcome to sign up for both days.
Each volunteer is matched with the same student for the duration of the school year allowing tutors and students to build strong, consistent relationships. During sessions, pairs work on completing math and reading materials provided by Northstar Tutoring, with support and guidance from Northstar staff. Students at Oxon Hill range from sixth to eighth grade, and volunteers are welcome to share their preferences for a particular age group or the subjects they feel most confident tutoring.
Beyond regular tutoring sessions, volunteers are encouraged, though not required, to take part in mentoring activities with their students. These activities can be as simple as going to the movies, visiting a museum, attending a sporting event, or meeting at a local library for extra tutoring sessions.
If you are unable to commit to attending sessions on a weekly basis, Northstar also welcomes those interested in serving as substitute tutors for occasional coverage when regular volunteers are unavailable. Please note, we accept new students year-round so volunteers can sign up at any time and no prior teaching or tutoring experience is required-most of our volunteers are brand new to tutoring!
If the Oxon Hill schedule or location does not work for you, Northstar has several other sites in need of support: (https://www.northstartutoring.org/programming).
