Childhood Education + Community Development Volunteer

Volunteer with The Small Things (TST)

We are a humanitarian, non-denominational, registered nonprofit with one simple goal: to create opportunities for vulnerable children and families in Nkoaranga. As a volunteer, you join a global network of people who want to make a real difference. Childcare volunteers stay a minimum of four weeks, so the children can build steady, lasting relationships rather than facing a constant turnover of new faces. You will support education, learn about Tanzanian culture and international child welfare, and work alongside community members and their families. If you have an open mind and a desire to learn while making an impact, this is for you.

Note: This is a volunteer position with no financial stipend.

    Highlights

    • Create engaging programs for children, including art, music, yoga, science experiments, and day trips
    • Volunteer ethically with a small, grassroots organization that is jointly Tanzanian and American run, focused on family preservation and community development
    • Stay a minimum of four weeks, starting any time of year
    • Learn about sustainable community development and childhood education from Tanzanian experts
    • Take part in community-based education, agriculture, and health projects
    • Affordable accommodation at $400 per month or $125 per week, with small, flexible fundraising goals. 100% of funds raised go directly to programs and children, never to salaries or admin costs (not needed if you have your own housing nearby)
    • Enjoy full-time staff support, cultural activities, and Swahili lessons (if needed)

    Responsibilities

    • Join afterschool sessions and reading programs
    • Teach English to and play with children ages 3-6 in the daycare
    • Develop new learning activities for daycare and community outreach children
    • Teach computer and English classes to community members and students
    • Support social enterprise students

    Requirements

    • Commit 35 hours per week to TST programs
    • Experience with children and a genuine passion for working with them
    • An open, respectful attitude toward learning from a small grassroots organization and the community it serves
    • Pass a background check (or your country’s equivalent)
    • Follow our Child Protection Policy and Code of Conduct at all times
    • Participate in fundraising goals
