Help Winterize New Hiking Trails by Raking Leaves

Holden Arboretum has several miles of newly established hiking trails through old growth forests. For the best trail tread health, as many leaves as possible need to be cleared off the trails before winter snow comes. This reduces the buildup of moisture and lets the trails cure.

On Sunday, November 2, individuals, families, and small groups are invited to help clear trails as part of a Holden Forests & Gardens ALL PLAY Day. ALL PLAY Days at Holden Forests & Gardens are when we host one-time volunteer activities that are open to anyone, whether you are an active volunteer with us or not! It’s an opportunity to help the environment, meet new people, try out volunteering for us and hopefully, have a little fun! Plus, you get the benefit of free parking and free admission before or after your shift, so you can enjoy our remarkable forests & gardens.

    Here are the details:

    • WHEN: Sunday, November 2 from 1-4pm
    • WHERE: Volunteers should meet in the parking lot of the Cooper Administration Building, 9500 Sperry Rd, Kirtland, located very near the main entrance to Holden Arboretum. There we will have a brief orientation and have access to restrooms and water refilling stations in the Cooper building, before we hike into the woods as a group. It is important that all volunteers arrive on time.
    • WEAR: Volunteers MUST wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and dress for the weather; dressing in layers is encouraged. Volunteers who are not dressed in proper attire will be turned away.
    • WHAT TO BRING: Please bring a water bottle. Bugspray and backpacks for storing gear are also recommended. All necessary equipment, including child and adult-sized gloves and rakes, will be provided.
    • WHAT ELSE: All volunteers are required to read and sign our Volunteer Waiver & Agreement (sent when you register). Volunteers age 18+ can print it out and bring it with you or sign a paper copy at the work site. IMPORTANT: Volunteers under age 18 MUST print this waiver, have a parent/guardian complete and sign both sides, and bring the signed waiver with them to volunteer. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Interested? Sign up below. Spots are limited, so please sign up only if you know you will be able to participate.

NOTE - This activity is weather-dependent. Volunteers will be notified by email in case of cancellation.
