About the Team

The Workplace Climate Action Team exists to support and grow the #learn-workplace-climate-action Community of Practice (CoP)* within Work on Climate (WoCl). Our community is for professionals who are passionate about driving climate action and sustainability within their workplaces! We want to equip them with resources, experts, knowledge-sharing events, and a community of people with similar challenges and goals.

We are looking for a new Team Lead to steer these efforts.

A Community of Practice is a community whose primary goal is helping practitioners build relationships with each other that are helpful for their practice. Time commitment

10 hours/week consistently for the next 6+ months.

What will I do?

In short, you will lead the Workplace Climate Action (WCA) Team to success! Though each Team Lead will bring their own unique flair to the role, the core responsibilities of the Team Lead are:

• Managing volunteer team members and WCA projects as needed to accomplish your team’s quarterly objectives at a high bar of excellence
• Build a strategy to grow the impact of the Workplace Climate Action CoP (#learn-workplace-climate-action channel in Slack).

What skills and commitment do I need?

You will need to be highly organized and have basic management skills;

• Proven experience with community organization, building and scaling systems of interactions and influence within groups.
• Good intuition for group dynamics and how people might respond to different kinds of programs, events, and messaging
• Excellent individual and group communication skills, ability to work with people of different work and communication styles
• A “founder mindset” – doing whatever it takes, and learning whatever skills are needed to accomplish the goal of the sub-community. Today you might craft a highly actionable message, tomorrow you might run an event or organize information on a Notion page.
• Dependability and ability to roll up your sleeves. The natural tendency in volunteer projects is for things to slip through the cracks, and as Team Lead, the buck will stop at you.
• Experience in leading climate action in a workplace is a plus

Common Challenges

• Our main challenge for this role has been in figuring out a repeatable, scalable system for creating “well-run” Communities of Practice.
• Managing a team of volunteers who have competing personal priorities.
• Work with other departments on common challenges
• Make sure the volunteers have everything they need to succeed
• Ensure that the team always has enough volunteers to support the ongoing programs and development of new ones (community work will never get boring, there is always room to experiment)
