    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability. Through academic enrichment, mentorship, literacy development, social-emotional learning, creative arts, policy engagement, housing initiatives, and community-centered innovation, MAP builds safe, consistent, and empowering spaces where young people can thrive.

The HR & Organizational Governance Division ensures MAP operates with integrity, compliance, ethical leadership, and alignment with New York City, New York State, and federal regulations. This division oversees onboarding, training, compliance, volunteer engagement, internal policies, labor best practices, and organizational governance structures.

    About the Role

We are seeking an HR Compliance Specialist to support MAP’s compliance, governance, and internal controls across all programs and volunteer operations. This role is essential in ensuring MAP adheres to legal standards, ethical expectations, child safety regulations, and nonprofit governance requirements.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, highly organized, knowledgeable about HR compliance, and passionate about building safe, transparent, and accountable systems within a mission-driven nonprofit environment.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Ensure MAP’s HR processes, volunteer onboarding, documentation, and training align with NYC, NYS, and federal labor and nonprofit requirements.
    • Support compliance with child safety protocols, background checks, confidentiality agreements, mandatory reporting policies, and risk management guidelines.
    • Maintain accurate volunteer and team compliance records across HR systems.
    • Review and update MAP’s HR policies, SOPs, volunteer handbook, and governance materials.
    • Assist with onboarding documentation, including agreements, training modules, and compliance forms.
    • Conduct internal audits to identify compliance gaps and recommend improvements.
    • Monitor and communicate changes in employment law, nonprofit regulations, or city guidelines relevant to MAP’s operations.
    • Provide compliance training or guidance to MAP teams, managers, and volunteers.
    • Collaborate with Legal, Policy, and Program divisions to ensure consistent compliance across MAP Roots, MAP Connect, PromisePlay, Threads of Voices, and Storytelling & Media.
    • Prepare summaries, memos, and compliance reports for leadership.
    • Check and respond to emails daily, with responses within 48 hours.
    • Take responsibility for performance improvement by integrating feedback and refining oversight practices.

    Qualifications

    • Experience in HR compliance, nonprofit administration, human resources, or organizational governance.
    • Knowledge of employment regulations, volunteer management standards, confidentiality practices, and risk mitigation.
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
    • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • Passion for ethics, equity, youth protection, and mission-centered governance.

    Bonus Skills (not required)

    • Experience in New York City or New York State labor law, nonprofit governance, or HR auditing.
    • Knowledge of COIB considerations for city employees involved with nonprofits.
    • SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or similar certification (not required).
    • Bilingual or multilingual abilities (Spanish or Haitian Creole preferred).

    Commitment

    • Volunteer role, 5–10 hours per week.
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred.
    • Hybrid: In-person in NYC and/or remote via Google Meet.

    What You’ll Gain

    • Hands-on experience in HR compliance within a growing nonprofit organization.
    • Collaboration with MAP’s HR, Legal, Policy, and Program divisions.
    • Professional development in compliance auditing, HR governance, and nonprofit operations.
    • Letters of recommendation and strong professional references.
    • The fulfillment of ensuring MAP remains safe, ethical, compliant, and mission-aligned.
