Roman Camp Initiative - Community Social Advocacy and Empowerment:

Project goal

To strengthen the cognitive, social, financial and livelihood readiness of vulnerable children and youth by using chess and strategic board games as an engaging platform for practical skills development.

Core objectives

• Improve critical thinking, logical reasoning, concentration, planning and problem-solving
• Strengthen emotional regulation, resilience, communication, teamwork and leadership.
• Introduce financial literacy: budgeting, saving, responsible spending and simple records
• Build basic enterprise-readiness: customer needs, costs, pricing, revenue, profit and risk
• Create safe community spaces where young people can learn, compete and lead.
• Train local facilitators and establish reusable community learning infrastructure.
• Generate evidence on the feasibility and cost of scaling game-based youth skills development.

If vulnerable children and adolescents receive regular, structured and safe opportunities to practice strategic thinking, life skills and financial/enterprise concepts through participatory game-based learning, supported by trained local facilitators and community clubs, then participants will strengthen practical capabilities and confidence that can contribute to better educational engagement, decision-making and future livelihood readiness.

Core principles

Child-centred: learning is active, age-appropriate and participatory.

Inclusive: participation is open to girls and vulnerable groups without discrimination.

Practical: every major concept is connected to a real-life decision or activity.

Safe: safeguarding is integrated into recruitment, facilitation and events.

Sustainable: local facilitators, hubs and reusable equipment remain after the grant period.

Evidence-informed: results are measured and used to improve delivery.

At Roman Camp Initiative we use CHESS to teach non-violent conflict resolution and build discipline in our children.We also manifest critical thinking and problem-Solving being it is a strategy game that requires players to think several moves ahead.

It has enhanced critical thinking skills as children have learnt to anticipate their opponent's moves, plan their responses, and formulate long-term strategies. This mental exercise is sharpening their problem-solving abilities, which are valuable in academics and daily life hence contributing to SDG10.

Underlisted are the project stakeholders responsibilities;-

1. Child Rights and Protection: Leading the "Sustainable Child Livelihood Approach" to safeguard children from domestic violence and community abuses, especially those living below the poverty line in urban and rural Uganda.
2. The Infant Career Development Approach: Promoting gender equality and social inclusion by integrating chess into marginalized communities to build dialogue and cross-cultural cohesion.
3. Socio-Economic Advocacy: Directing localized outreach and education campaigns designed to elevate vulnerable families and provide developmental support.
