Change a student's life - volunteer to tutor a student in Eastern Market/Capitol Hill!

Northstar Tutoring’s mission is to help low-income and underserved K-12th grade students in the D.C. area reach their full potential by overcoming barriers to personal and academic success. By matching students with their own volunteer tutor/mentor we strive to provide the free academic support and personal attention that these students may not otherwise have.

Northstar’s Sasha Bruce location (741 8th St. SE) meets on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6:00-7:30 pm (most volunteers sign up for one day a week, but are of course welcome to sign up for more!). Please note, volunteer and student pairs are allowed to hold tutoring sessions virtually, if preferred. Virtual sessions are scheduled at whatever day/time works for the student and volunteer.

Each volunteer is matched with the same student for the duration of the school year allowing tutors and students to build strong, consistent relationships. During sessions, pairs work on completing math and reading materials provided by Northstar Tutoring, with support and guidance from Northstar staff. Students at Sasha Bruce range from 7th to 12th grade, and volunteers are welcome to share their preferences for a particular age group or the subjects they feel most confident tutoring.

Beyond regular tutoring sessions, volunteers are encouraged, though not required, to take part in mentoring activities with their students. These activities can be as simple as going to the movies, visiting a museum, attending a sporting event, or meeting at a local library for extra tutoring sessions.

If you are unable to commit to attending sessions on a weekly basis, Northstar also welcomes those interested in serving as substitute tutors for occasional coverage when regular volunteers are unavailable. Please note, we accept new students year-round so volunteers can sign up at any time and no prior teaching or tutoring experience is required-most of our volunteers are brand new to tutoring!

If the Sasha Bruce schedule or location does not work for you, Northstar has several other sites in need of support: (https://www.northstartutoring.org/programming).

For more information or to sign up, either respond to this ad or email Rebecca Kimani at rkimani@northstartutoring.org.
