Youth Mentoring Program
Voluntary Position Summary:
The Mentor provides support and guidance to the assigned youth within the program for a minimum of one year, meeting an average of one hour per week (minimum 4 hours per month). The Mentor offers friendship to the youth, serving as a role model, motivator and advocate.
Qualifications:
- Sincere desire to be personally involved with another person to help him or her achieve goals;
- Ability to communicate with teenagers openly and nonjudgmentally;
- Strong listening skills;
- Ability to establish a relationship based on equal responsibility and respect;
- Practical problem-solving skills and ability to suggest options and alternatives; and
- Sensitivity to persons of different educational, economic, cultural or racial backgrounds.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Be at least 18 years of age (21 preferred).
- Reside in the metropolitan area surrounding Southwest Key’s offices.
- Be willing to adhere to all Southwest Key Mentoring Program policies and procedures.
- Agree to a minimum 6-month commitment to the program.
- Commit to spending a minimum of 4 hours a month with the mentee (minimum 1 hour weekly preferred).
- Be willing to communicate and/or meet with the mentee weekly.
- Complete the screening procedure and criminal background check successfully.
- Agree to attend 2–3 hours of initial mentor training (and additional training throughout this year, if possible).
- Be willing to communicate regularly with the program staff and submit monthly notes about your activities with your mentee.
- Be willing to participate in some group activities organized by Southwest Key.
- Have access to a vehicle or reliable transportation.
- Have a current driver’s license, auto insurance, and good driving record.
