Role Description:
We are seeking dedicated, empathetic, and enthusiastic individuals to serve as Virtual Youth Mentors. This crucial volunteer role involves building meaningful, supportive relationships with a group of youth participants through structured, virtual sessions. Mentors will facilitate group discussions, encourage goal setting, and act as a positive role model to empower participants in their personal and academic growth, directly contributing to our mission of holistic wellness and community support.
Key Responsibilities:
- Facilitate Virtual Group Sessions: Commit to leading or co-leading engaging and supportive virtual group mentoring sessions twice a month for a consistent period of at least one year.
- Build Positive Relationships: Establish rapport and trust with mentees, providing encouragement, active listening, and constructive feedback in a safe and non-judgmental virtual environment.
- Support Goal Achievement: Guide youth in identifying personal, educational, and professional goals, and help them develop actionable steps and accountability to achieve them.
- Promote Self-Efficacy: Serve as a positive role model, sharing experiences and insights to inspire resilience, critical thinking, and healthy decision-making among mentees.
- Uphold Program Integrity: Adhere strictly to all program guidelines, confidentiality policies, and safety protocols for virtual interaction with minors.
- Attend Training & Orientation: Participate fully in the mandatory volunteer training and program orientation to ensure readiness and alignment with organizational values and methods.
- Consistent Communication: Maintain consistent communication with the Mentoring Program Coordinator regarding session schedules, participant progress, and any necessary support or concerns.
Qualifications:
- Commitment: The ability to make a firm commitment to the program for a minimum of one year, meeting with the group twice a month.
- Experience & Passion: Demonstrated passion for working with youth and an understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing young people in under-resourced communities. Previous experience (volunteer or professional) working with youth or facilitating groups is highly desirable.
- Interpersonal Skills: Exceptional communication and active listening skills, with a patient, empathetic, and encouraging demeanor.
- Virtual Proficiency: Comfort and proficiency with virtual communication platforms (e.g., Zoom, Google Meet) and reliable internet access to host engaging online sessions.
- Problem-Solving: Strong capacity for exercising sound judgment, navigating challenging group dynamics, and proactively addressing issues with guidance from program staff.
- Integrity: A high degree of professionalism, integrity, and discretion, especially when handling sensitive personal information or discussing mentee challenges.
- Alignment with Mission: A deep, demonstrated passion for the mission of SelfSoulLiberate: achieving health equity and reducing mental health stigma.
