    Descripción

Nuya’ is an Indigenous-led nonprofit organization working in Sololá, Guatemala to foster Indigenous women’s leadership through training, education, health initiatives, and community-based programming. Formerly known as Mil Milagros, Nuya’s name comes from the Indigenous Kaqchikel language and means “the cycle of giving,” reflecting the organization’s collaborative and community-centered approach to sustainable change. Today, Nuya’ directly serves more than 2,000 women, teachers, and children annually through programs focused on health, education, leadership, and economic development. For more information, visit www.nuya.org.

    Position Overview

Nuya’ seeks passionate, mission-driven individuals to join its Board of Directors. Ideal candidates will be deeply committed to advancing equity, Indigenous women’s leadership, improving public health, and promoting quality education and sustainable community development in rural Guatemala. Nuya’ is particularly interested in leaders with experience in fundraising, nonprofit finance, media, journalism, or strategic communications who can help strengthen the organization’s expanding impact. Nonprofit Board experience is a plus, but not required. We maintain a global community of supporters and welcome Board members located anywhere in the world.

The Board of Directors is the highest leadership body of the organization and is responsible for:

    • Contributing to the development of and approving the mission and purpose of the organization
    • Hiring and evaluating the performance of the Executive Director
    • Guiding strategic and organizational planning
    • Performing fiduciary oversight
    • Fundraising and resource development
    • Reviewing and approving the program portfolio presented by staff leadership
    • Monitoring the effectiveness of program execution and outcomes
    • Assessing its own performance as the governing body of Nuya’

    Board members are expected to:

    • Know the organization’s mission, values, policies, programs, and needs
    • Follow the organization’s bylaws, policies, and board resolutions
    • Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in quarterly board meetings as well as any additional meetings deemed necessary
    • Read and understand the organization’s financial statements
    • Participate fully in one or more committees
    • Serve as active advocates and ambassadors for the organization within professional, philanthropic, and community networks
    • Fully engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary to advance the mission
    • Give a meaningful personal financial donation every year
    • Sign an annual conflict of interest disclosure and update during the year if necessary
    • Maintain confidentiality about all internal Nuya’ matters

    Terms for Board Participation

Board members serve a three-year term with eligibility for re-appointment. Board meetings are held quarterly and committee meetings will be held in coordination with full board meetings. Members are expected to attend all four quarterly meetings per year, and at least one “in person.” Members located outside of New England are provided a stipend for travel for the annual in-person meeting in December. Service on Nuya’s Board of Directors is without remuneration.
