Ideal expertise includes:
- Significant experience in cybersecurity strategy, risk assessment, IT governance, data privacy and protection, preferably within mission-driven organizations.
- Proven track record in designing or scaling cost-effective IT systems or platforms — including cloud services, remote collaboration tools, data management systems, and cybersecurity controls.
- Comfort working in organizations with limited IT resources and ability to translate technical options (and risks) into organizational priorities and budget implications.
- Ability to serve as a trusted advisor to the Executive Director/staff on IT planning and oversight, and to bring in external vendor or consultant networks as needed.
- Awareness of emerging technology risks and opportunities (e.g., remote work security, data analytics, AI, digital collaboration tools) and ability to guide strategic adoption.
Key responsibilities may include:
- Partner with staff (and consultants, if used) to perform an IT and cybersecurity assessment: identify vulnerabilities, gaps in policy, infrastructure and data protection.
- Develop or review an IT roadmap: define priority initiatives, budget/cost implications, timelines, and how they align with organizational strategy and capacity.
- Advise on the selection, implementation and oversight of technology systems (including cloud services, remote work tools, data storage/backups, service provider risk assessments).
- Help the Board and staff establish IT and cybersecurity policies and procedures (e.g., data access and retention, disaster recovery, incident response, vendor risk management).
- Work with the Board’s risk oversight process to ensure that technology risk is included in enterprise risk management, reporting regularly on progress, compliance and emerging threats.
- Serve as the Board’s resident technology resource: prepare a brief annual review for the Board on IT/cyber posture; help us stay informed of best practices and technology-enabled efficiencies.
- Act as ambassador for the organization within your professional network: making introductions to technology/IT vendor partners, helping identify pro bono support or cost-efficient solutions.
- Engage in Board governance practices: attend Board and relevant committee meetings, review IT-related documentation, contribute to Board self-assessment of technology oversight.
