Volunteer Advisor – Nonprofit Legal & Compliance

About Us
Young STEAMers is a San Francisco Bay Area nonprofit dedicated to inspiring children to explore science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) and guiding them toward STEM careers. We believe a child’s zip code should never limit their potential. Through free, hands-on programs, we bring high-impact STEAM education to kids aged 4–14 and provide career guidance for youth aged 14–24.
The Role
We are seeking a Volunteer Legal & Compliance Advisor to provide guidance and expertise on nonprofit regulations, compliance requirements, and risk management. This role is ideal for someone with legal or nonprofit governance experience who would like to contribute their knowledge to a growing mission-driven organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Advise the board and leadership team on compliance with nonprofit regulations and reporting requirements.
- Provide occasional input on contracts, agreements, and risk management considerations.
- Share updates on new or changing nonprofit laws and best practices.
- Be available for periodic consultations to answer questions as they arise.
- Help ensure Young STEAMers remains compliant while pursuing growth opportunities.
Qualifications
- Background in nonprofit law, compliance, governance, or related fields (JD, paralegal, or equivalent experience preferred).
- Familiarity with California and/or federal nonprofit regulations is highly desirable.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain legal/compliance concepts clearly to a small nonprofit team.
- Commitment to supporting under resourced communities.
