Arizona summers can be dangerously extreme, and for many of our unhoused neighbors, access to relief from the heat is limited. Each year, The Salvation Army generously opens its doors to provide a safe, welcoming place for individuals seeking shelter from the intense summer temperatures.
The Cooling Center, located inside The Salvation Army Hospitality House at 1002 N. Main Ave., will operate seven days a week from June 1 through September 30. The center is open to clients daily from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., offering essential services including hot meals, shower access, laundry facilities, a cool place to rest, and cold drinks to help prevent heat-related illness.
We are currently seeking compassionate, dependable volunteers who are committed to serving others with dignity and respect. Volunteer Cooling Center monitors play a vital role in creating a safe and supportive environment for those in need. Responsibilities may include:
- Assisting with client check-in and welcoming guests
• Monitoring activities within the cooling center
• Supporting kitchen staff with meal service and light food preparation
• Setting up, breaking down cots, and restocking supplies
• Distributing hygiene and laundry items, and assisting with service sign-ups
• Helping maintain clean and organized common areas
• Supporting staff in ensuring a safe, respectful, and positive environment for all clients
We welcome individuals who are comfortable working with people from diverse backgrounds and life experiences and who can bring patience, kindness, and positivity to each shift. Volunteer shifts are a minimum of four hours and are scheduled Monday through Sunday, from 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. to ensure continuity of care and adequate support throughout daily operations. Additional volunteer hours are greatly appreciated and encouraged!
By volunteering at the Cooling Center, you can make a direct and meaningful impact during Arizona’s hottest months. Your time and compassion can provide comfort, safety, and hope to those who need it most. For more information, please contact Kristin Ohman, Volunteer Coordinator, at 520-448-3997.
Thank you for your support and commitment to our community!
