Bring Comfort and Companionship to Hospice Patients

Treasure Coast Hospice is seeking compassionate volunteers to provide companionship and emotional support to hospice patients throughout Martin and St. Lucie counties.

Patient Visitor Volunteers offer the simple but meaningful gift of their time. By listening, talking, reading aloud, playing cards or games, or quietly sitting beside a patient, volunteers can reduce isolation and bring comfort to patients and their families. Volunteers may also provide companionship to a patient while a caregiver takes a brief, much-needed break.

Visits may take place in patients’ homes, assisted living communities, nursing facilities, or one of our hospice houses. Our greatest need is for volunteers willing to visit patients in their homes. Whenever possible, volunteers are matched with assignments near their own communities.

What You’ll Do

Patient Visitor Volunteers may:

• Provide friendly companionship and a supportive presence
• Engage patients in conversation and practice active listening
• Read aloud, play cards or games, watch television, or enjoy music together
• Offer quiet companionship when a patient does not feel like talking
• Provide brief caregiver respite by remaining with a patient
• Communicate regularly with the Volunteer Services team
• Document visits and volunteer hours as required

This is a nonmedical volunteer role. Volunteers do not transfer or lift patients, administer medications, feed patients, or provide transportation.

Time Commitment

This is an ongoing volunteer opportunity requiring approximately 10 hours per month. Visit schedules are coordinated based on the needs and availability of the patient, family, and volunteer. Weekday availability is especially helpful.

Qualifications

No healthcare experience is required. The most important qualifications are compassion, dependability, patience, maturity, and the ability to listen without judgment.

Applicants must:

• Be at least 18 years old
• Have reliable transportation
• Hold a valid driver’s license and current automobile insurance
• Complete required background and drug screenings
• Complete a TB test
• Attend volunteer orientation and Patient Visitor Volunteer training
• Respect patient privacy and maintain appropriate boundaries

Bilingual volunteers and veterans are especially encouraged to apply.
