    Who We Are

National Wildfire Tracking (NWTT) is a non-profit, non-partisan public safety information and situational awareness organization focused on wildfires, severe weather, and disaster events across the United States. Our mission is to deliver timely, verified, and actionable information that helps communities, responders, and decision-makers understand developing incidents in real time. We are expanding our technology team and looking for Volunteer Developers to help build and improve our digital platforms nationwide.

What You Will Do as a Volunteer Developer:

    • Develop and maintain features on NWTT’s wildfire tracking website and internal tools
    • Build and improve interactive mapping systems (fire perimeters, weather overlays, WUI layers, satellite views, distance tools, etc.)
    • Integrate external data sources (incident feeds, weather APIs, wildfire datasets)
    • Assist with automation systems and alert integrations
    • Support development of premium tools such as saved locations, advanced map features, and live feed integrations
    • Help improve performance, reliability, and scalability during high-traffic breaking incidents
    • Collaborate with other developers and newsroom staff to deploy new features

    What You Bring:

    • Interest in public safety technology, disaster response, mapping, or emergency management
    • Experience with web development (JavaScript, React, or similar frameworks preferred)
    • Familiarity with APIs and data integration (JSON, REST, etc.)
    • Experience with mapping tools (Google Maps API, Leaflet, GIS platforms) is a plus
    • Cloud or infrastructure experience (AWS preferred) is a plus
    • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
    • Ability to work in a remote setting and collaborate with a distributed national team

    Minimum Commitment:

1 hour/week is encouraged, but no less than 2 hours/month is required to stay active.

Hours are trackable for service hours documentation.

    Interview Process:

NWTT prides itself on having a transparent volunteer onboarding process. You can expect the process to go as follows:

    • Application submission inclusive of resume, GitHub or portfolio (if available), and general questions
    • Resume/experience screen by NWTT leadership
    • Phone and/or Google Meet interview with team leadership
    • Offer/Acceptance
