Let's Work Together to Move the Museum into the Future!

Even if your favorite channel ISN'T the History Channel, or you don't secretly love anything with "Victorian" in it, or plan whole vacations around visiting old houses... you could STILL enjoy serving as a board member on our Board of Directors.

    What we are not:

    • Just a dusty old house on the hill
    • Haunted
    • Boring....

    What we are:

    • An education center
    • A community center
    • A beautiful piece of living history for Eugene.

SMJ House is looking for board members who can help further our vision of a thriving community museum. They should be ready and able to open up their contact list and dial in their friends and colleagues to this gem of a place. A passion for history is a plus but not required. Looking for individuals who are community-oriented and not afraid of fundraising. An ideal candidate is looking for an opportunity to become engaged in an organization looking to grow in a variety of ways.

These board members will be required to attend monthly board meetings, serve on at least one committee, and take on special assignments as needed. These meeting are typically 1.5 hours each once a month. Special assignments can range in time and responsibility. Committees include Curations and Collections, Education Planning/Community Outreach, Building and Grounds, and Marketing/Fundraising.

Board Members must represent the House in the community and look for potential partnerships in the community to increase the museum’s visibility in the community. They are expected to adhere to the larger list of responsibilities, as well as the mission statement, bylaws, etc. Members are encouraged to share information in their fields of specialty and to help with educating staff, volunteers, and fellow board members where that applies.

Members with backgrounds in development and business are encouraged. We are also looking for board members with backgrounds in various nonprofit areas such as financial/accounting, fundraising, non-profit legal needs, volunteer recruiting, and marketing.

We request that Board Members contribute financially to the organization at a level that is significant to them. SMJ is in the middle of a $600k capital campaign to build an outdoor educational platform. They should expect to be active in fundraising activities.
