Descripción
Join Pierce Conservation District at Local Color Farm & Fiber on June 12th from 9 AM - 12 PM for a morning of hands-on volunteering as we perform essential upkeep on a pollinator hedgerow right along the Puyallup River! Volunteers will help clear encroaching weeds from around hedgerow shrubs and trees so they may continue to grow and provide precious wildlife habitat, erosion control, pollinator food, water filtration, and more!
What is a hedgerow?
A hedgerow is made up of rows of carefully selected plants that grow together into a diverse, living hedge. These plantings provide food and shelter for pollinators, beneficial insects, birds, and other wildlife. Hedgerows also work to reduce erosion, stabilize waterways, suppress unwanted weeds, filter stormwater runoff, and contribute to the overall health of the surrounding landscape.
What will volunteers be doing at the event?
Volunteers can expect to use hand tools to clear weeds from around hedgerow plants. After clearing, volunteers may spread mulch to reduce competition and drought stress during the dry season.
For your safety and comfort, please bring and/or wear:
- Clothing that can get dirty
- Long pants and sleeves
- Layers and rain gear (the event will happen rain or shine)
- Sturdy shoes (closed-toe shoes required; please no sandals or flats)
- Full water bottle!
