A Free Bird is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in New York City. We empower children diagnosed with cancer to explore their artistic passions through art, music, writing, performance, and other creative outlets. By supporting self-expression, we help young people build resilience, confidence, and hope throughout their healing journey.
Role Overview
The Finance & Accounting Associate supports the day-to-day financial operations of A Free Bird by maintaining accurate records, supporting budgeting efforts, and ensuring responsible allocation of funds across departments. This role is ideal for someone with foundational finance or accounting experience who wants hands-on exposure to nonprofit financial operations while contributing to a mission-driven organization.
You will work closely with the Finance, Business & Operations, and leadership teams to help ensure financial accuracy, transparency, and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Support accounts receivable and accounts payable processes, including invoice tracking and documentation
- Assist with preparing monthly financial statements and departmental balances
- Track, record, and reconcile organizational contributions and expenses on a weekly basis
- Identify and help resolve billing discrepancies, invoice errors, or documentation gaps
- Collaborate with Business & Operations to support quarterly and annual budgeting processes
- Maintain and update financial records in accordance with nonprofit accounting standards
- Communicate across departments to ensure accurate financial reporting and alignment
Skills & Qualifications
- 1–3 years of experience in finance, accounting, bookkeeping, or a related field (professional, internship, or volunteer experience accepted)
- Strong attention to detail with demonstrated bookkeeping or financial record-keeping experience
- Ability to apply financial reasoning to real-world operational questions and recommend solutions
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively in a remote environment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and Google Workspace (Sheets, Docs, Drive)

- This is a remote volunteer associate-level role
- Requires an over 3-month commitment, 5–10 hours per week
- Must have reliable access to a computer, internet, and availability for periodic phone or video check-ins
