    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit organization serving children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, education, literacy, social-emotional learning, creative expression, career development, advocacy, and community-centered opportunity.

As MAP grows across programs, partnerships, technology, publishing, advocacy, fundraising, research, workforce development, and other initiatives, responsible growth requires more than good intentions.

It requires strong governance, ethical decision-making, appropriate controls, and an organization capable of recognizing its obligations before they become problems.

    The Opportunity

MAP is seeking thoughtful, analytical, and highly ethical Regulatory Compliance & Ethics Analysts to help strengthen our organizational compliance and ethics infrastructure.

This is not simply a policy-writing position.

Analysts will help MAP understand an increasingly important question:

What does responsible organizational practice require?

You will research regulatory and compliance considerations, identify potential risks, review organizational practices, support policy development, maintain compliance documentation, and help leadership translate complex requirements into practical organizational action.

The work follows a simple principle:

    Identify → Research → Assess → Recommend → Implement → Document → Monitor → Improve

The objective is not compliance for compliance's sake.

It is to help MAP operate responsibly, ethically, consistently, and in a manner worthy of the trust placed in a youth-serving nonprofit.

    Regulatory Research & Analysis

Research regulatory, compliance, and governance requirements relevant to MAP's activities.

    Areas may include:

    • Nonprofit governance
    • Charitable organizations
    • Volunteer management
    • Youth-serving organizations
    • Safeguarding
    • Privacy and data protection
    • Cybersecurity governance
    • Fundraising
    • Grants
    • Financial controls
    • Conflicts of interest
    • Records management
    • Accessibility
    • Digital communications
    • Technology
    • Artificial intelligence
    • Intellectual property
    • Partnerships
    • Research and data practices

Translate research into clear summaries that organizational leaders can understand and use.

Analysts should distinguish carefully between regulatory requirements, recognized standards, organizational policies, recommended practices, and emerging issues.

    Compliance Risk Assessments

Help identify and evaluate compliance risks across MAP.

    Consider:

    What activity is occurring?

What rules or policies may apply?

    Who could be affected?

    What controls currently exist?

    Where are the gaps?

    How significant is the risk?

    Who owns the issue?

    What action should be considered?

Help develop practical approaches for documenting and prioritizing compliance concerns.

    Ethics & Organizational Integrity

Support MAP in developing an organizational culture where ethical decision-making extends beyond minimum compliance.

    Help examine questions involving:

    • Conflicts of interest
    • Organizational integrity
    • Transparency
    • Accountability
    • Responsible use of resources
    • Fairness
    • Professional conduct
    • Decision-making
    • Youth dignity
    • Responsible technology
    • Ethical partnerships
    • Appropriate boundaries

Something can be technically permissible and still deserve deeper ethical consideration.

    Help MAP ask both:

    Is this allowed?

    and:

    Is this responsible?

    Policy Research & Development

Support the development, review, organization, and improvement of MAP policies and procedures.

    This may include policies addressing:

    • Ethics and conduct
    • Conflicts of interest
    • Compliance
    • Privacy
    • Information governance
    • Records
    • Safeguarding
    • Volunteers
    • Financial practices
    • Technology
    • Artificial intelligence
    • Accessibility
    • Communications
    • Partnerships
    • Reporting concerns

Policies should translate principles and requirements into understandable expectations.

A policy that nobody can understand is difficult to follow.

    Compliance Monitoring

Help develop systems for monitoring important organizational compliance activities.

    This may include maintaining:

    • Compliance calendars
    • Requirements trackers
    • Policy-review schedules
    • Risk registers
    • Action-item trackers
    • Documentation inventories
    • Training requirements
    • Governance records
    • Corrective-action follow-up

Help MAP move from reactive compliance toward proactive compliance management.

    Compliance Reviews

Support structured reviews of programs, processes, projects, partnerships, or organizational practices when compliance considerations arise.

    A review may follow:

    Activity → Requirement → Existing Control → Evidence → Gap → Risk → Recommendation → Owner → Follow-Up

    Document findings carefully and objectively.

The Analyst's role is to help leadership see risk clearly—not exaggerate it or minimize it.

    Emerging Risk & Regulatory Change

Help MAP understand developments that may affect its work.

Monitor appropriate developments in areas such as nonprofit regulation, privacy, artificial intelligence, digital technology, cybersecurity governance, accessibility, fundraising, youth protection, and other relevant areas.

    Help distinguish:

Important Change → Potentially Relevant Development → Emerging Trend → Noise

Not every headline creates a new organizational obligation.

    Good compliance analysis requires judgment.

    Responsible AI & Emerging Technology

As MAP explores artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies, support governance teams in evaluating regulatory and ethical considerations.

    Potential issues may include:

    • Privacy
    • Data use
    • Transparency
    • Human oversight
    • Bias and fairness
    • Intellectual property
    • Youth-facing technology
    • Automated decision-making
    • Vendor practices
    • Accountability
    • Documentation

Work with technology, privacy, cybersecurity, governance, and appropriate legal professionals to support responsible innovation.

    Youth-Serving Organization Compliance

Because MAP serves children and youth, compliance work must reflect heightened responsibilities around safeguarding, privacy, professional boundaries, consent, communications, and responsible information handling.

Help evaluate processes and policies through the question:

What additional responsibility comes with serving young people?

Program urgency, organizational growth, or technological convenience should never override youth safety.

    Compliance Documentation

Help MAP build organized evidence of responsible governance and compliance activity.

    Documentation may include:

    • Research memoranda
    • Compliance assessments
    • Risk registers
    • Policy inventories
    • Control documentation
    • Compliance trackers
    • Decision records
    • Review findings
    • Corrective actions
    • Monitoring records
    • Governance summaries

Good governance requires more than doing the right thing.

Organizations should also be able to demonstrate how important decisions were considered and addressed.

    Cross-Functional Collaboration

Compliance touches nearly every part of an organization.

Work with PromiseTrust on governance and organizational risk.

Collaborate with PromiseShield on privacy, cybersecurity, and information governance.

Partner with PromisePeople on people and volunteer practices.

Work with PromiseFinance where financial controls or grant compliance are relevant.

Collaborate with PromisePrograms on youth-serving operations and safeguarding.

Partner with PromiseStack around technology and emerging systems.

Coordinate with PromisePublic where regulation, policy, advocacy, government, or accessibility considerations intersect.

Support Executive Leadership in understanding significant compliance issues.

The Analyst provides research, structure, analysis, and recommendations while qualified legal professionals provide legal advice when required.

    Escalation & Professional Judgment

Part of strong compliance work is knowing when an issue requires expertise beyond the Analyst role.

Recognize matters that should be escalated to:

    • Legal counsel
    • Governance leadership
    • Privacy leadership
    • Cybersecurity leadership
    • Safeguarding leadership
    • Finance leadership
    • Human Resources
    • Executive Leadership
    • Other appropriate subject-matter experts

The goal is not to personally answer every question.

The goal is to make sure important questions reach the right people.

    The Ideal Candidate

This role is well suited for someone who enjoys asking:

    What applies here?

    What are we missing?

    What evidence supports this?

    Where is the risk?

What would responsible practice look like?

How can we make this clearer?

    What should happen next?

    Potential candidates may include:

    • Compliance analysts
    • Ethics professionals
    • Governance analysts
    • Risk analysts
    • Regulatory analysts
    • Policy analysts
    • Internal-control professionals
    • Legal operations professionals
    • Law students or graduate students with relevant experience
    • Professionals transitioning into compliance or governance
    • Retired compliance, risk, governance, or regulatory professionals

You should be comfortable with complexity without creating unnecessary alarm.

MAP needs people who can identify risk while still helping the organization move forward.

    Qualifications

Strong candidates may bring experience or education in:

    • Regulatory compliance
    • Ethics
    • Governance
    • Risk management
    • Law
    • Public policy
    • Internal controls
    • Privacy
    • Nonprofit compliance
    • Corporate compliance
    • Financial services compliance
    • Healthcare compliance
    • Technology governance
    • Audit
    • Regulatory affairs

    Candidates should demonstrate:

    • Strong research and analytical ability
    • Excellent written communication
    • Critical thinking
    • Attention to detail
    • Sound professional judgment
    • Ability to interpret complex requirements
    • Strong documentation skills
    • Ability to distinguish facts from assumptions
    • Comfort working across multiple subject areas
    • Discretion and confidentiality
    • Ability to work independently
    • Willingness to escalate issues appropriately
    • Strong ethical judgment
    • Commitment to MAP's mission and values
    • Residence in the United States

Professional certifications or legal credentials are welcomed but are not required.

    What Success Looks Like

MAP has greater visibility into its compliance obligations.

    Regulatory questions are researched systematically.

    Compliance risks are identified earlier.

Policies become clearer and more organized.

    Requirements have owners and follow-up.

    Compliance documentation becomes stronger.

    Emerging risks receive appropriate review.

Leadership receives practical information rather than unexplained legal or regulatory language.

Issues requiring professional legal advice are escalated appropriately.

Compliance becomes increasingly proactive rather than reactive.

And MAP continues growing without allowing organizational complexity to outpace responsible governance.

    What You'll Gain

This role provides meaningful experience at the intersection of compliance, ethics, governance, nonprofit operations, technology, privacy, youth-serving programs, and organizational risk.

You may have opportunities to examine real-world questions spanning multiple disciplines rather than working within a single narrow compliance area.

For an emerging compliance professional, this can provide valuable applied experience.

For an experienced professional, it offers an opportunity to bring years of judgment and expertise to a growing mission-driven organization.

    Why This Role Matters

Compliance is sometimes treated as the department that says no.

    We see it differently.

Excellent compliance helps an organization understand how to move forward responsibly.

It asks the question before the problem.

It identifies the gap before the incident.

It creates the process before confusion.

It documents the decision before institutional memory disappears.

And it reminds an organization that trust is difficult to earn and easy to lose.

The Regulatory Compliance & Ethics Analyst helps MAP build systems worthy of that trust.

    Volunteer Commitment

This is an unpaid, fully remote volunteer position requiring approximately 5–10 hours per week with a minimum six-month commitment.

Consistent participation, discretion, professional judgment, communication, and reliable follow-through are essential.

Volunteers should provide at least two weeks' notice when ending their service whenever possible.

    How to Apply

Interested candidates should apply directly through Idealist and submit:

    • A current résumé
    • A cover letter describing their interest in regulatory compliance, ethics, governance, and Mentor A Promise

Candidates should highlight relevant experience in compliance, ethics, governance, regulatory affairs, risk management, policy, law, privacy, audit, internal controls, or related fields.

We are particularly interested in candidates who can take complicated requirements, analyze them carefully, communicate them clearly, and help translate them into practical organizational action.

At this time, MAP volunteer opportunities are limited to individuals based in the United States due to legal, safeguarding, data-privacy, compliance, and programmatic requirements.

Ask the difficult question before it becomes the difficult problem. Identify the risk. Understand the requirement. Protect the mission. Strengthen accountability. And help MAP build an organization where doing good and doing things responsibly are inseparable.
