Southern Europe's summers are no longer what they were. Each year the heat arrives earlier, sits longer, and hits hardest in the places least equipped to absorb it, top-floor flats, care homes, and neighbourhoods with no shade and no cooling.

This is not passive volunteering. This is practical, community-rooted engagement where your presence matters from day one.

As a V4C volunteer in Italy, you will support heatwave preparedness in local communities: helping identify residents most at risk during extreme heat, supporting door-to-door and telephone check-in networks for older and isolated people, running simple public awareness sessions on hydration, cooling, and recognising heat exhaustion, mapping accessible cool spaces such as libraries and public buildings, and documenting what actually works so that other communities can learn from it.

Your role is not symbolic — it is active, visible, and participatory. You become part of a living process that strengthens trust, amplifies local voices, and deepens community connection. Every effort you make contributes to a wider ripple of meaningful, lasting change.

Whether you are new to volunteering or already experienced in community work, V4C creates a space where your contribution is not only welcomed but needed. Italian language skills are an advantage for this placement but are not a requirement — teams are mixed and support one another.
