A New Mission: Serve Those Who Served - Veteran Volunteers Needed for Veteran Hospice Patients
You answered the call to duty once, and now, we invite you to answer it again. We are seeking compassionate veterans to provide companionship, support, and a unique camaraderie to hospice patients who share your distinguished background. Your understanding, born from shared experience, can bring immense comfort and relief to a veteran and their family during this final chapter of life.
What You Will Do:
- Provide Companionship: Visit with a patient, which may include reading, talking, listening to music, assisting with light activities, or simply being a reassuring presence by their bedside.
- Document Life Stories: Talk with patients and learn their life stories, documenting them to provide a lasting legacy for their families.
- Be a Team Member: Serve as a vital part of the hospice team, following a collaborative Plan of Care.
Commitment and Requirements:
- Must be a veteran.
- Visits are flexible and scheduled to work for you and the patient/facility.
- You will be matched with a patient within an acceptable distance from your home.
- A one-year commitment of approximately 100 volunteer hours (about 2 hours per week) is requested.
- You will be required to undergo a background check and a two-step TB test (at no cost to you).
- State-mandated hospice training (online) is required and provided free.
- Must meet all requirements of Dignity Health Employee Health screening.

Qualifications:
- Completion of 8 hours of State mandated volunteer training through Hospice Relias Volunteer Training, End-of-Life Specialist certification or equivalent to be assessed and determined by the Dignity Health Hospice Volunteer Services Supervisor.
- Meeting all requirements of Dignity Health Employee Health screening and clearance for duty, including but not limited to initial health appraisal, vaccinations, and annual PPD testing.
- Compliance with maintaining these requirements.
- Current California Drivers License or ID
- Proof of auto insurance
- Availability of operating motor vehicle
- Current CPR certification recommended but not required
