Join Monterey State Historic Park’s Period Attire team! Help us manage and enhance our period accurate clothing to benefit the mission of California State Parks. The park's collection of over 500 replica historic attire pieces and outfits are used for Living History special events. A collection of this size needs frequent maintenance and expansion so we ask for your help!
Volunteering in the Period Attire program at Monterey State Historic Park involves the following:
- Interpreting Monterey State Historic Park through historic garments and attire of the 1830’s and 1860’s at MSHP events.
- Sewing, mending, and altering historic garments
- Laundering and ensuring cleanliness of the garment collection.
- Expanding the period attire collection through the creation of new items of clothing with historically accurate fabrics, patterns, and materials.
- Assisting staff with annual inventory of entire period attire collection.
- Facilitate check in and check out of garments, maintaining a current record of clothing on loan.
- To acquire a background of Monterey history, including information on MSHP buildings and what role attire plays within that history.
- Being mindful of artifact and garment security and public safety.
The MSHP Period Attire team meets weekly on Thursdays from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This volunteer opportunity is flexible so you may choose to meet more or less frequently to your preference.
