Make a difference in the life of another person by simply sharing your time, attention, and compassion. Use your creative strengths and interests as you aid in the living of someone who faces the final year of a terminal illness, and in being part of a community that cares for each other.
You don't need experience in healthcare - just kindness, reliability, and the willingness to help a neighbor facing a hard time.
You can provide companionship to a patient doing activities like singing, reading aloud, chatting, watching tv or movies, listening to music or just holding a hand.
You can provide respite to family members who are exhausted by the task of full-time caregiving, and need a few hours a week to take care of themselves.
We ask our volunteers to pass a background check (which requires a social security number) and get a Tb and drug test (for drugs not legal in IL). We provide extensive orientation so that no one enters a situation feeling unprepared. We can work with most schedules, but prefer that you have weekly availability for a few hours, and be wiling to commit to this for 9 months or longer.
Volunteers are the heart of hospice. You allow us to go above and beyond, to make our families and patients feel cared for on a deeper level, and to remind them that their community is here for them. If you think this role sounds like a good fit - we'd love to have you!

Thank you so much for your interest in volunteering with Unity Hospice! Our volunteers do incredible work to help our patients and families navigate the end-of-life journey with the care and support they need. From relieving a caregiver so they can take a much-needed break or helping to care for patient pets – walking the dog or caring for the cat, to spending time with patients reading, singing, talking, or listening, to helping with behind the scenes work in our office - volunteers play an essential role in our team and help us go above and beyond with our clients. We serve our patients wherever they call home, be it their own home, the home of a relative, or a nursing, assisted or independent living facility. Patient Support volunteers will need to be willing to travel to the sites where patients live, as providing comfort in the location of their choice is part of the hospice model. Our administrative volunteers will primarily work out of our Chicago office at 3232 S King Dr.
We don’t require our volunteers to have any experience with hospice or healthcare – all it takes to be a good hospice volunteer is empathy, kindness, reliability and good listening skills. We will train our volunteers to work through any issues they may encounter. In order to volunteer, an applicant must be willing to get a tb test and drug test for drugs not legal in IL, as well as a background check that requires fingerprinting (all of which we will pay for). Volunteers must complete our online and in-person training and be willing to commit for at least a year to working with Unity (to give our patients consistency and justify the costs of onboarding).
If joining Unity interests you and you’d like to move forward as a volunteer, please complete this Volunteer Application, and email us a few days/times that you could meet up for an interview (Ideally between 9 and 5, M-F, although we can occasionally accommodate if it needs to be outside those hours, or if it needs to be a virtual meeting rather than in person).
Thanks again, and we look forward to hearing from you!
