ENGLISH TEACHER/ASSISTANT TEACHER

As a teacher or assistant in our English classes you will be working with a group of adult immigrants, using a textbook series that includes a teacher's manual that outlines in a very detailed way how to present the material you will be covering. We hold classes in four or five levels, from Newcomer through Level Three or Four. The lower levels tend to have the most students, and assistants are especially helpful in those groups. Classes are held Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-8 PM. You will teach or assist on one of those nights, and you will coordinate with the teachers who are working with the same group on the other night. Our class sizes vary a lot, and students come with a huge range of educational and personal backgrounds. We accept new students throughout the school year, so we always have brand new students who need special attention. We especially ask volunteers to commit to the full school year since that helps each class form a cohesive community and students are far more likely to stick with the program that way. Spanish is helpful but not required in the lower levels but anyone with a compassionate heart and a sense of humor will do great in any of our levels.
