    SPIN Forward Mentor

    Purpose:

    The SPIN Forward Mentor at STEM Paths Innovation Network will provide a culturally responsive and uplifting mentorship experience for girls of color by engaging with them monthly in Orientation, Lab and Field Days, culminating in a capstone project. This is a one to three year time commitment.

    Location:

    The SPIN Forward Mentor will work out of SPIN’s main office at 3407 NE 2nd St, Renton, WA 98056 and at designated sites and events as identified by SPIN Forward.

    Key Responsibilities:

    The SPIN Forward Mentor will:

    (1) Attend 80% of events

    (3) Provide a shadow opportunity for mentees if possible

    (4) Maintain prompt communication with program staff & report mentee activities

    (5) Respect general SPIN policies

    (6) Participate in mentor meetings, surveys and training

    (7) Be open to building relationships with mentees and SPIN program staff.

    Reports to:

    SPIN Forward Program Manager

    Length of Appointment:

    The SPIN Forward Mentor will volunteer for a length of no less than one school, up to three school years.

    Qualifications:

    SPIN seeks women of color* working or studying in a STEM field** who can manage mentoring and building relationships with girls of color by providing a culturally-responsive and uplifting mentorship experience. Mentors need to be flexible in their methods of relationship building. Mentors should be experienced with connecting to youth in a positive way.

    The SPIN Forward Mentor must undergo a background check and SPIN mentor training to work with students.

    Support Provided:

    An orientation to SPIN and SPIN Forward will be scheduled for the SPIN Forward Mentor. The SPIN Forward Manager is available on an ongoing basis to answer questions and provide other assistance as needed.

    Time Commitment:

    The SPIN Forward Mentor will provide up to 10 hours a month throughout the school year.
