CASA Volunteers (Court Appointed Special Advocates) make a huge difference in the life of a child in foster care. CASAs visit a child or family and become the expert, so they can make the recommendations as to what is needed for the child to thrive. These recommendations could be as simple as new glasses so the kid can see in class, an IEP or 504 plan to help in school, making sure the child has been to the doctor, dentist, or therapist if needed, and making sure they can participate in their favorite sport or extracurricular. They also advise the judge as to where the child should live.
CASAs don't do this work alone. They are trained and supported by their ProKids advocacy team, which is their CASA Manager who advises on the child protection system, and their attorney, who goes with them to court to advocate in the child's best interest. Mostly, it is visits to the child where they are living or going to school. CASAs have the time to build trust with the child and be someone who shows up when they say they are going to. It's just a few hours a month, but it will change their life- and yours.
Once your info is submitted, you'll be invited to attend a virtual information session, or Snapshot. When you start training, we will also have to complete a background check since you'll be working directly with children.
