Join us for protecting and enhancing the health of Lake Merritt's urban forest on Sat., Jan. 17th, in observance of MLK Day weekend! It'll be a hands-on community stewardship event dedicated to supporting the health of several beloved Coastal Live Oaks, including a centenarian! We’ll be applying sheet mulching—a sustainable, soil-building practice that boosts moisture retention, enriches soil structure, and promotes long-term tree vitality.
Volunteers will help spread layers of organic bark mulch around selected oaks, improving growing conditions for the iconic trees that have shaded and shaped our urban landscape for over a century. All tools, materials, and guidance will be provided. No experience necessary—just bring your curiosity, teamwork, and interest in urban forestry and soil ecology!
Thank you for helping steward and strengthen the resilience of Lake Merritt’s treasured urban forest. We look forward to working with you on Sat. January 17th! 🌱✨
