Discord Community Moderator (Events & Live Experiences-Remote)

    Remote · Volunteer · Event-Based · Live Participation Required

    About AFK Cafe

AFK Cafe is a consent-based, online community focused on creativity, connection, and sustainable participation. We prioritize presence over performance and community over extraction. Roles within AFK Cafe are collaborative, relational, and designed to support both the community and the people who help run it.

    Role Overview

AFK Cafe is seeking Event Moderators — community stewards who help host, guide, and support live experiences that make the Cafe feel lively, welcoming, and genuinely engaging.

This is a visible, relational authority role. Event Moderators are active participants in the community, not behind-the-scenes enforcers. Presence matters here: engaging in chat, being on mic when appropriate, and helping people feel oriented and included.

If you enjoy hosting, facilitating, or simply being part of the energy of a room, you’ll likely feel at home.

    How We Work Together

Moderators at AFK Cafe operate as a collaborative team with shared context, shared systems, and shared responsibility. While roles have different focuses, we do not work in silos.

You don’t need to be best friends with everyone—but you do need to be communicative, reliable, and aligned. Community-building here is relational, not performative. We value warmth, emotional awareness, and a sense of humor alongside responsibility.

This is a growth-supportive environment. If you have ideas for events, formats, or experiences you would like to develop, you are encouraged to share them. Creativity is actively supported, with coordination and approval used to ensure alignment, pacing, and sustainability.

After acceptance, moderators complete a personality and work-style assessment to support team flow, communication, and burnout prevention. This is a support tool, not an evaluation.

We are a team. We support one another. Perfection is not required.

Types of Events You May Support

Event Moderators may host or assist with:

    • Game nights and casual play
    • Tabletop sessions and one-shots
    • Anime, movie, and watch parties
    • Creative sessions (art, writing, co-working)
    • Cozy or low-energy hangouts
    • Community discussions or themed events
    • Experimental or member-led events

Moderators are encouraged to bring their own event ideas.

All new events require coordination and approval before scheduling.

    What Event Moderators Do

    • Host or co-host live events
    • Welcome participants and orient new attendees
    • Guide pacing and flow
    • Support accessibility and emotional safety
    • Uphold community guidelines during events
    • Coordinate light preparation and follow-up
    • Work with chat moderators and event support roles
    • Communicate clearly about scheduling and capacity

This role focuses on facilitation and care, not control.

Examples of What This Role Actually Looks Like

    • Hosting a watch party or game night
    • Co-hosting an event with another moderator
    • Greeting people as they enter and helping them settle in
    • Starting conversations so events don’t feel awkward or silent
    • Adjusting pacing if energy shifts
    • Helping new members feel included
    • Supporting quieter participants without pressure
    • Suggesting new event ideas that fit monthly themes
    • Checking in with the team if something felt off or needs adjusting

    What This Role Is Not

    • Not a performance role
    • Not content creation unless you choose to
    • Not responsible for running every event
    • Not responsible for fixing everything alone
    • Not expected to be socially “on” at all times

Support is shared across the moderation team.

    Presence Requirement

If you do not want to engage socially, participate live in chat, or be on mic when needed, this role will not feel comfortable.

Authority at AFK Cafe is visible and relational.

Moderators help shape the tone of the space simply by being present.

    Commitment Details

    • Event-based volunteer role
    • Live participation required during events you support
    • Reliability and communication are essential
    • Weekly or biweekly check-ins during active periods
    • No requirement to run events every week
    • Capacity and availability are respected

    Communication & Coordination

Slack is used for internal communication, coordination, and shared logs. Participation is required for moderators.

These systems exist to support clarity and prevent burnout — not to micromanage.

    Professional Development

Moderators in good standing may request a professional reference verifying leadership, reliability, and community moderation experience based on observed role performance.

This can support resumes, graduate applications, or professional portfolios.

Skills That Are Helpful (Not Required)

    • Event hosting or facilitation
    • Comfort speaking in groups
    • Warm, inclusive communication
    • Emotional awareness and boundaries
    • Adaptability when plans shift

Alignment and presence matter more than prior experience.

    Cause Areas

    Community Development

    Arts & Culture

    Mental Health (non-clinical, community-centered)

    Creative Communities

    Other Requirements

    • Must be 18 years or older
    • Ability to participate respectfully in live community spaces
    • Willingness to communicate scheduling changes
    • Comfort using Discord and Slack
    • Alignment with a consent-based, values-driven community

    Volunteers Needed

    3–6 Event Moderators

    Culture Fit

AFK Cafe values curiosity, warmth, humor, and people who enjoy being part of a living, creative community. We take care of our space — and we also laugh, play games, and don’t believe seriousness requires stiffness.

If you care about people and enjoy showing up as a full human (memes included), you will probably feel at home here.

    Final Note

When events feel welcoming, grounded, and enjoyable for both hosts and participants — the system is working.

We are building something sustainable here.

You do not have to carry it alone.

    Application & Alignment Process (Important)

To be considered for a moderator role, you must join the AFK Cafe Discord.

Applications submitted without joining the Discord will not be reviewed, and no follow-up will be initiated.

AFK Cafe is a values-led community. If someone joins the Discord but does not show interest in learning about the cafe, its values, or the people who make up the space, we are unable to assess true alignment. In those cases, applications will not move forward.

This step is not a test. It is an invitation to experience the community before committing to a leadership role.

    Next Steps

    1. Submit the interest application

    1. Apply to join the AFK Cafe Discord

When you join, please mention that you came from Idealist so we can connect you to your application.

    1. Explore the community

You will be encouraged to spend time getting a feel for the environment, values, tone, and population of the cafe.

    1. Follow-up & placement

If there is mutual alignment, a follow-up application or conversation will clarify interests, capacity, and next steps. There is no pressure to proceed.

    Alignment matters more than speed.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to join the AFK Cafe Discord to be considered?

Yes. AFK Cafe is a live, relational community. Applications will not be reviewed unless the applicant has joined the Discord. We do not follow up on applications submitted without Discord participation.

Why is joining the Discord required?

Moderation at AFK Cafe is grounded in presence, values, and real interaction. Joining the Discord allows both you and the team to assess whether the community feels like a good fit before moving forward.

What does “explore the community” mean?

It means spending some time observing and engaging—reading channels, joining conversations, attending an event, or asking questions. You are not expected to perform or prove yourself, only to show genuine interest in understanding the space.

What if I join but do not participate much right away?

That is okay. We are not looking for instant visibility. However, if there is no demonstrated interest in learning about the cafe, its values, or its people, we will not be able to assess alignment and the application may not proceed.

Is this a competitive or fast-moving process?

No. We prioritize alignment, capacity, and sustainability over speed. There is no pressure to move forward if the fit is not mutual.

Will someone contact me after I apply?

Only if the application and Discord presence indicate potential alignment. Not all applications receive follow-up.

    Is this a paid role?

This is a volunteer role with opportunities for leadership experience, skill development, and professional reference upon request, based on role performance.

Who is this role best suited for?

People who enjoy shared experiences, value community care, communicate reliably, and want to help create spaces that feel both welcoming and well-held.
