English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Tutor

Our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program teaches oral English, reading, and writing to adults who have immigrated to the U.S. from around the world. ESOL is the largest program at Literacy Together, serving approximately 250 students annually. Our students’ most common goals in learning English are to improve their employment prospects, help their children in school, and pass the U.S. Naturalization exam.

The ESOL Program has a waiting list of 100 people who have been waiting months for a tutor!

Each student works with a trained volunteer tutor, either individually or in a small group of up to ten people. Tutoring takes two hours a week at times convenient for both the tutor and the student.

We currently offer online training, and tutors can meet their students in person or remotely. We work with tutors from all over the world!

Testimonials from people who participated in the orientation meetings:

"I loved the stories that were shared of how volunteers enhanced the lives of adults and children through tutoring. I am excited to contribute to developing children’s literary skills, as I am passionate about literature. ~ Lauren

"I was surprised to learn about the number of people in Buncombe County who cannot read." Carol
"I was surprised by many of the statistics about literacy rates and had not considered just how strongly literacy is linked to poverty and family history. All the more eager to help!" ~Karen
"The statistics shown were very important, especially about gaps in literacy levels between black and white students." ~ Nadia
" I did not know that you could volunteer internationally. That is great!" ~ Eric

    Thanks!
