    MLK Day of Service

Join Napa RCD and City of Napa Parks and Rec for our annual MLK Day of Service, where we unite with our community for a day of action and impact!

This year we have moved the event to the Napa River Trail, so please pay attention to the updated meeting location! Parking will be a little limited, so please allow time to find parking and walk to the meeting location.

English ivy is a major issue when it leaves your yard and enters our natural spaces. Along the Napa River Trail, English ivy has not only taken over the ground, but has worked its way up the trunks of many of our native trees lining the Napa River. When this happens, the ivy can overtake the tree and kill it over time. We’re on a mission to make sure that doesn’t happen to our local trees!

What’s the Plan? We will be working with our friends at City of Napa Parks and Rec to continue an ongoing ivy removal project along the River Trail. We will be focusing on ivy that is climbing trees, but there is also plenty of ivy on the ground for folks to work on, as well. We will be cutting the ivy and leaving the majority of it to die on the tree so that we don’t risk tearing off bark when we pull the ivy down. No experience? No problem! Our Teen Conservation Interns will help you learn to identify and properly remove ivy from trees and from the ground.

What to expect: Napa RCD and City Parks will provide all training and bring all tools including gloves and loppers. If you have a SMALL hand saw (nothing with a motor!) you can bring that with you. There will be tasks for all ability levels. Folks should be prepared to be walking on uneven terrain for the majority of the work day. You will get to experience the immediate satisfaction of seeing your hard work pay off!

What to wear: Sturdy shoes and clothes appropriate for the weather.

Where to meet: Please park respectfully in the neighborhood and enter the trail between 2448 and 2450 Shoreline Dr. Follow the signs until you see Napa RCD and City of Napa staff!

This is a fantastic opportunity for youth, families, and community members to come together, give back, and honor the spirit of MLK Day. Let’s make it a day to remember!
