Mission: Why does the role exist?
This role exists to build and manage a sustainable marketing and communications department at Statistics Without Borders, positioning SWB as a recognized global force for positive change and maximizing the number of high-quality clients with whom SWB engages. This role also sits on the SWB Executive Committee and will contribute meaningfully to strategic SWB work that extends beyond marketing.
Outcomes: What 4-6 things will the role need to achieve over the next 2 years that will define its legacy?
- Build on our current processes — or develop structure where gaps currently exist — to articulate, quantify, and communicate SWB’s impact across its projects, clients, and volunteers.
- Empower SWB to significantly and sustainably scale up its number of projects per year, including new channels of demand generation, via marketing.
- Integrate demand generation, content, and branding activities seamlessly across the full suite of SWB work.
- Once the current structure is set up for success, expand the scope of marketing. This might include:
- Building out a strategic partnerships function that cultivates high-quality, mutually beneficial relationships between SWB and other organizations via a repeatable process.
- Developing a product or education function that allows SWB to accomplish its mission above and beyond our current pro bono project offerings.
- Build and maintain a strategic roadmap for the above, including goals and metrics to assess progress toward goals.
Competencies: What role specific skills and experiences are needed to be successful?
Strongly desired:
- Previous experience leading demand generation, business development, lead generation, or content teams.
- Previous experience leading volunteers, especially remotely or across time zones.
- Building and executing marketing and branding strategies, including change management to implement new plans across teams.
- Demonstrated experience creating fast, sustainable growth via marketing & communications.
- Comfort experimenting with new processes.
Desired:
- Experience building corporate or executive communications (e.g. annual reports, annual meetings)
- Experience working with not-for-profit organizations or non-governmental organizations.
