About Us
The YMCA of Honolulu is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Kaimuki-Waialae YMCA has served East Honolulu for decades, offering programs that include early education, after-school care, aquatics, fitness and wellness classes, and enrichment opportunities for kupuna and families.
Role Description
As a Mahjong Teacher , you’ll help create a fun, welcoming, and socially engaging environment for kupuna and community members through weekly mahjong instruction and gameplay. This role focuses on connection, cognitive engagement, and fostering community through shared activity.
Time Commitment
1-2 hour commitment
Fridays between 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Weekly volunteer opportunity
Key Responsibilities
- Teach basic mahjong rules, gameplay, and etiquette to participants
- Facilitate friendly games and encourage inclusive participation
- Create a warm, respectful, and engaging environment for kupuna and members
- Assist with setup and cleanup of tables, tiles, and materials
- Encourage social interaction and community connection through gameplay
Impact
You’ll help foster connection, lifelong learning, and mental engagement by creating a consistent weekly space where kupuna and community members can gather, socialize, and enjoy a shared cultural activity.
Ideal Volunteer
- Friendly, patient, and community-oriented
- Comfortable engaging with seniors (kupuna)
- Knowledge of mahjong gameplay and willingness to teach beginners
- Reliable and able to facilitate small groups independently or with staff support
