Caregiver Canines (r)

ShareCare is looking for owners and their certified therapy dogs to visit people who are elderly/disabled and are hombound. This is a unique opportunity for owners and their dogs to visit people in their homes and have a one on one experience.

What is Caregiver Canines(r):

Imagine not being able to own a dog because of medical problems or social isolation and never being able to interact with one. If you are a dog lover, this is an unimaginable loss, yet one that is faced by thousands of senior citizens. That’s why Caregiver Canines(r) was started- to bring to the homebound frail elderly and people with dementia the joy and companionship that only a dog can bring. Caregiver Canines(r) enriches people’s lives- both the volunteers who visit with their dogs and the people they visit.

How does it work:

A certified therapy dog and their owner are matched to a senior citizen to make visits to their homes. The visits take place once a week or once every other week and last for about an hour. This allows for a deep friendship to form between the handlers, the dogs and the people they visit.

What makes Caregiver Canines(r) different:

Most therapy dogs visit institutionalized settings like hospitals and nursing homes. Caregiver Canines(r) is different in that we visit people in the comfort of their own homes and they receive one-on-one attention. The bond that forms between the people and the dogs is incalculable. Dogs are known to reduce stress and loneliness and improve the health and self-esteem of those they visit. Simply put, our Caregiver Canines(r) dogs make every person they visit feel special!
