About the initiative
Mabuhay Gardens is a storied cultural venue with a legendary history. The building has hosted performances by legends including Louis Armstrong, Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Dead Kennedys, Iggy Pop, The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, The Specials, Metallica, Guns N' Roses, Herbie Hancock, R.E.M., Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Soundgarden, Bad Religion, Dave Chappelle, and many others. Via CrowdDoing, we are regenerating the Mab as a hybrid cultural ecosystem: live music, dance, comedy, rentals, popup culinary lab, off-peak wellness partnerships, art-walk activations, and solarpunk / regenerative-culture programming.
The dance floor at the Mab has hosted moshing punk crowds and spoken word performances, but never a sustained dance program. We are looking for someone to help build partnerships with fusion and contact-improv dance communities to create regular programming that uses the Mab's off-peak hours — afternoons, early evenings, and non-show nights — as a dance space.
What you'll do
- Partnership mapping — Build a working map of fusion and contact-improv dance communities, instructors, and collectives whose work could find a home at the Mab.
- Program concept development — Shape formats for regular classes, open jams, and special events that fit the Mab's schedule and space.
- Genuine community connections — Approach dance communities with real curiosity about their needs first, before proposing a specific format or date.
- Concept handoff and documentation — Bring well-researched partnership concepts to the Mabuhay producing team with full context.
Who this role is for
Somebody with real, demonstrable skill in at least two of the following:
- Experience in fusion, contact improv, or partner dance communities
- Event programming or community organizing experience
- A genuine connection to dance communities in the Bay Area or broader West Coast
- Curious mind: you love learning about how dance communities organize and find spaces
Time commitment & structure
- Flexible, part-time, mostly asynchronous
- Ongoing commitment, renewable
- Onboarding via CrowdDoing's standard volunteer orientation
CrowdDoing is an equal-opportunity volunteer organization. We welcome contributors of every background, geography, and career stage. This is an unpaid volunteer role and service-learning opportunity.
