Marketing and Communications Volunteer: Content and Storytelling

Organization: Little Oaks Center for Neurodevelopment

    Location: Remote; NYC area preferred

Time commitment: Approximately 5 hours per week

Initial commitment: Three months, with the opportunity to continue by mutual agreement

    Works closely with: Program Director

    About Little Oaks

Little Oaks Center for Neurodevelopment is building a welcoming, community-centered organization where neurodivergent individuals, families, caregivers, and professionals can find trusted resources, meaningful connection, and practical support.

Our mission is simple: No one should have to navigate the neurodevelopmental journey alone.

Through our Resource Hub, community programming, partnerships, and growing network of supporters, we're working to make it easier for families to find information, connect with others, and feel that they belong.

    About the Opportunity

We're looking for a strong writer and thoughtful communicator who wants to use their skills to support a growing, community-centered nonprofit.

As a Marketing & Communications Volunteer, you'll help turn Little Oaks' priorities into clear, engaging communications that help families discover resources, participate in shaping our work, connect with community opportunities, and learn how to support our mission.

You'll collaborate closely with our Program Director, who will provide priorities, background information, briefs, and feedback. We're looking for someone who can take those inputs and develop polished content with initiative, sound judgment, and reliable follow-through.

This is a hands-on, content-focused opportunity—not a requirement to manage every communications channel or develop an entire marketing strategy. We'll establish priorities together so you can focus your time on meaningful, manageable assignments.

    What You'll Help With

    Resource Hub

    • Create content introducing families and community members to our Resource Hub and its resources.
    • Help explain how the Hub works and encourage people to explore and share relevant resources.
    • Adapt approved messaging for social media, email, and community outreach.

    Community Input Survey

    • Draft accessible, engaging messaging that invites families, caregivers, and community members to share their perspectives.
    • Help communicate why community input matters and how it can inform the future of Little Oaks.
    • Develop follow-up content that encourages participation and acknowledges community contributions.

    Events & Community Engagement

    • Write promotional copy, event reminders, and follow-up communications.
    • Help communicate upcoming programs, workshops, partnerships, and opportunities to connect.
    • Adapt messaging for relevant audiences and channels.

    Fundraising & Organizational Communications

    • Help communicate Little Oaks' mission, current priorities, and opportunities to contribute.
    • Draft donor-facing and community-facing messages that reflect our values and funding needs.
    • Support approved fundraising campaigns and calls to action.

Assignments will be prioritized collaboratively, with the Resource Hub, Community Input Survey, events, and fundraising communications guiding the initial work. Priorities may shift as organizational needs evolve.

    What We're Looking For

    • Strong writing and editing skills, with an ability to make information clear, engaging, and accessible.
    • Good judgment about audience, tone, messaging, and calls to action.
    • Reliability and follow-through on agreed-upon assignments and deadlines.
    • Comfort working from a brief, incorporating feedback, and taking ownership of content through completion.
    • A collaborative approach and willingness to ask questions when context or direction is needed.
    • Interest in community-centered communication and Little Oaks' mission.

Experience with social media, newsletters, nonprofit communications, copywriting, content marketing, or community engagement is welcome.

Familiarity with neurodiversity, disability inclusion, education, family support, or community-based organizations is helpful but not required. Lived experience is welcome but not required.

    How We'll Work Together

The Program Director will provide organizational context, content priorities, relevant materials, and feedback. Little Oaks leadership will retain approval of public-facing messaging and fundraising communications.

We'll agree on assignments, deadlines, and priorities in advance, with flexibility to accommodate the volunteer's availability. The goal is a sustainable collaboration in which you can contribute meaningfully without being expected to respond to requests at all hours or manage competing priorities without support.

The initial commitment will be approximately five hours per week for three months. At the end of that period, we'll review what is working and determine whether to continue or adjust the scope by mutual agreement.

    Why Volunteer With Little Oaks?

Your writing can help families find trusted resources, share their experiences, connect with others, and learn about opportunities to participate in and support our work.

You'll work directly with our Program Director on real organizational priorities, see how your contributions are used, and help strengthen the way Little Oaks communicates with its community.

At Little Oaks, we believe people come before programs, relationships matter, and community is something we build together.
