    Descripción

    Purpose of the Role

    The Volunteer GED Tutor supports adult patients in preparing for the General Educational Development (GED) exam. This role contributes to patient recovery, confidence-building, and successful reintegration into the community through educational achievement.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring in GED subject areas (Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading, and Writing).
    • Assist patients in understanding academic concepts and completing practice exercises.
    • Encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, and independent study skills.
    • Help students set achievable academic goals and track progress.
    • Maintain a supportive, respectful, and non-judgmental learning environment.
    • Communicate regularly with designated staff regarding attendance, progress, or concerns.
    • Follow all facility policies, confidentiality standards, and safety procedures.

    Time Commitment

    • Flexible scheduling based on volunteer availability and program needs.
    • Recommended commitment: (example) 2–4 hours per week for a minimum of 3 months to ensure continuity for learners.

    Qualifications

    • Strong proficiency in one or more GED subject areas.
    • Patience, empathy, and good communication skills.
    • Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
    • Experience in education, tutoring, social services, or related fields preferred but not required.
    • Willingness to complete orientation and required background screening.

    Training & Support

    Volunteers will receive:

    • Orientation to the behavioral health environment
    • Guidance on trauma-informed communication
    • Ongoing staff support during tutoring sessions

    By serving as a GED tutor, volunteers directly support individuals working toward educational advancement, increased independence, and long-term community stability. Educational success plays a critical role in recovery and personal empowerment.
