We are seeking individuals from all parts of Calaveras County to join our team of volunteer tutors for the Calaveras County Literacy Program.
Calaveras County Literacy provides one‑on‑one tutoring to learners aged 16 and older who are not currently enrolled in any other education program. We offer support in reading, writing, and math to adults with low literacy skills.
Tutoring pairs meet once or twice a week for learner‑driven sessions. The tutor’s role is to support the learner in meeting their needs and goals while helping them build confidence in everyday activities.
Our program is centered on each learner’s objectives. There is no time limit on how long a student may remain enrolled. Tutors and learners are periodically interviewed to assess progress and review goals.
Qualifications
Volunteer tutors must:
Tutors should bring patience, flexibility, a sense of humor, and a willingness to work with a diverse population at a learner‑driven pace. No prior teaching experience is required—just a commitment to supporting Calaveras County through a shared belief in the power of literacy.
All tutors will be fingerprinted and will complete tutor training as well as quarterly tutor meetings.
Commitment
We ask for a minimum commitment of six months. Tutoring sessions are 1.5 hours, once or twice a week. Tutors and learners coordinate directly to schedule their sessions. Tutors agree to report their hours monthly and follow CCLS reporting guidelines.
Where Tutoring Takes Place
Tutoring can be held at any of our eight Calaveras County library branches or at another mutually agreed‑upon location.
