DCAVP Volunteer Chair – Position Description

The DC Anti-Violence Project is a program of The DC LGBTQ+ Community Center. The primary mission of the DC Anti-Violence Project (DCAVP) is to work to reduce violence against LGBTQ+ individuals (and those perceived as LGBTQ+) through community outreach, education, and monitoring cases to ensure that the rights and dignity of LGBTQ+ victims and survivors are respected and protected. DCAVP also seeks to assist victims of anti-LGBTQ+ violence by advocating on their behalf, encouraging reporting, and providing a community of support.

The Volunteer Chair of the DC Anti-Violence Project (DCAVP) is an inclusive, and community-driven leader who plays a vital role in supporting the mission to end violence against and within all LGBTQ+ communities in Washington, DC. This volunteer-led position is ideal for someone who thrives on building relationships, creating welcoming spaces, and ensuring that volunteers and community members alike feel seen, supported, and empowered to take meaningful action for their narratives and safety.

The Volunteer Chair helps lead the heart of DCAVP’s work by organizing events, facilitating volunteer engagement, fostering organizational partnerships, helping develop marketing and outreach campaigns, and ensuring our advocacy remains rooted in community needs. As a bridge between staff, volunteers, community members, and partner organizations, the Volunteer Chair brings energy, clarity, charisma, and consistency to our movement-building work. We’re looking for someone who is both visionary and hands-on, someone who leads with empathy and builds with intention.

The key responsibilities of the volunteer role will also be shaped by that person, their experience, and their interest. The time commitment is around 5 hours a month depending on events that month. Below is an overview of areas we hope that the Volunteer Chair can lead and assist with.
