Help Bronx Students Apply for College!

    Title: College Prep Mentor

    Department: SBU Academy

    Supervisor: Program Manager- College Access

Works With: Students ages 17-19 (12th graders), Program Associates

    Description:

The SBU Academy is an after-school youth development academic program that aims to provide student-athletes with a comprehensive pathway from middle school through high school and college, ultimately preparing them for successful careers. The program focuses on academic support, social-emotional learning (SEL), and college and career development, equipping student-athletes with the necessary tools for their future success.

As an SBU College Prep Mentor, our volunteers will work with high school seniors to guide them through the college application process, from researching schools, with the necessary resources and support to graduate high school and pursue higher education successfully.

    Time Commitment:

Please note- this is an in-person volunteer opportunity.

Academic Mentors are asked to commit at minimum 2 hours, one day a week for one semester. Volunteers are invited to take additional shifts if they are available.

Our program is Wednesdays from 5:45 pm to 7:15 pm at Bronx Legacy High School (730 Concourse Village W, Bronx, NY 10451)

    Responsibilities:

    • Mentors assist seniors with creating a well-rounded college list that aligns with their interests, goals, and preferences. Factors that may influence this list may include academic programs, campus culture, location, and extracurricular opportunities.
    • Mentors help students craft compelling personal statements that showcase their unique experiences, strengths, and aspirations. Through brainstorming sessions, editing drafts, and providing feedback, mentors guide students in creating impactful essays highlighting their individuality and potential.
    • Mentors provide guidance on navigating the complex world of financial aid options such as scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study programs. Mentors also assist students in completing financial aid applications accurately.
    • Positive Role Model: Mentors serve as a positive role model for program youth by promoting the importance of education. Mentors inspire and motivate SBU seniors to pursue higher education opportunities while providing guidance along the way.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Passion for our mission and a genuine desire to make a positive impact in the South Bronx community
    • Writing skills: Mentors will assist students with their personal statements, supplemental essays, and other written components of their college applications. Mentors should be able to communicate ideas clearly, provide constructive feedback on drafts, and assist students with conducting research.
    • Strong communication skills: As a mentor, you will need excellent communication skills to guide and support program youth effectively. You should be able to listen actively, demonstrate empathy, and provide clear instructions and feedback. Bilingual volunteers are also welcome as many of our students also speak a language other than English.
    • Patience and Empathy: Mentoring involves working closely with individuals who may face various challenges during the college application process. Having patience, effective problem-solving skills, and empathy will enable you to navigate these challenges together successfully.
    • Cultural Sensitivity: Being sensitive to diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences is crucial as it allows mentors to understand each student's unique needs, perspectives, and challenges. This sensitivity helps create an inclusive environment where all students feel supported.
    • Reliable & Responsible: Commitment to attending mentoring sessions consistently and being punctual.

    Training:

College Prep Mentor training will cover the program's goals, objectives, and key

components, such as personal statements, college lists, and financial aid assistance.

Mentors will also learn about the college admissions process and effective mentoring

techniques. Additionally, cultural competency training may be provided to ensure mentors

can support a diverse group of students.

    Benefits:

Volunteering as a mentor in the SBU Academy offers numerous benefits, including personal

fulfillment, opportunities for personal and professional growth and networking with

like-minded individuals. Volunteering can also lead to positive outcomes such as increased

self confidence, sense of purpose and happiness.
