Board Member Opportunity – Beacon Hill Friends House (Boston, MA)

About Beacon Hill Friends House (BHFH)

Beacon Hill Friends House (BHFH) embodies the Quaker principles of faith, simplicity, integrity, community, and social responsibility in order to nurture and call forth the Light in all of us.

We live out this mission through intentional community living, public programs, and hospitality in a historic 1804 house in downtown Boston. BHFH is home to a 20-person residential community and serves as a hub for spiritual exploration, leadership development, and social action.

We are at an exciting moment as we prepare for a new phase of growth and building stewardship, ensuring this unique place continues to nurture connection and transformation for generations to come.

    The Role of Board Members

As a BHFH Board member, you will play a vital role in shaping the future of our organization, serving as both a steward and ambassador of our mission.

    Board members are expected to:

    • Engage deeply: Attend quarterly Board meetings (remote participation available), prepare thoughtfully, and bring curiosity and discernment to discussions.
    • Serve on a committee aligned with your skills and interests, such as Building Stewardship, Finance, Fundraising & Development, Personnel, Nominating & Governance, or Program Strategy.
    • Support the mission by making a personally meaningful annual donation and participating in fundraising efforts.
    • Be an ambassador: Share BHFH’s story with your networks, help recruit future Board members, and invite others to engage with our programs and community.
    • Collaborate with staff respectfully, recognizing their expertise and boundaries while working together to advance the mission.

This is both a practical and spiritual role. We seek Board members who bring courage, humility, and creativity to decision-making and who are excited to nurture a unique Quaker-rooted ministry in the heart of Boston.

    Who We’re Looking For

    We welcome Board members with:

    • Passion for BHFH’s mission and values.
    • Experience in areas like nonprofit governance, fundraising, finance, historic building preservation, community engagement, or Quaker leadership.
    • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
    • Willingness to listen deeply and engage in collaborative discernment.
    • Connections to Quaker communities, Boston-area networks, or nonprofit leadership are a plus — but not required.

    Committees at BHFH

Board members join at least one of the following committees:

    • Building Stewardship: Guides long-term maintenance, renovations, and accessibility improvements for our historic building.
    • Development (Fundraising): Builds donor relationships, crafts messaging, and sustains the financial health of BHFH.
    • Finance: Oversees budgets, investments, and financial sustainability.
    • Nominating & Governance: Recruits Board and committee members, strengthens governance processes.
    • Personnel: Provides guidance and support on staffing policies, compensation, and leadership evaluation.
    • Program Strategy: Helps shape our public programming, residency, hospitality, and facility use at a strategic level.

    Time Commitment

    • Board meetings: 4 per year (in person or hybrid).
    • Committee work: ~1–3 hours per month.
    • Term length: 3 years, renewable.

    Why Join the BHFH Board?

    • Be part of a vibrant, values-driven community working at the intersection of faith, justice, and community building.
    • Help steward a historic building that houses vital Quaker ministry and community life.
    • Join a diverse group of thoughtful, passionate individuals committed to collective discernment and meaningful impact.
    • Grow personally and spiritually while supporting a mission that shapes lives.
