Volunteer at Oakland (Valdez Plaza): Tech Tutor

Description:

Valdez Plaza is seeking a Tech Tutor to provide technology support to residents who have expressed interest in improving their digital skills. This volunteer will assist residents with troubleshooting and learning how to use cell phones, laptops, tablets, and common computer programs.

Sessions may be held in the morning or afternoon on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays. The role may occur weekly or monthly, depending on volunteer availability and resident needs. Knowledge of Chinese is helpful but not mandatory.

Reports to:

Volunteer Coordinator and the site’s Service Coordinator

Goal of Position:

To help residents gain confidence and fluency in using technology to better manage daily tasks, access information, and stay connected with others.

Specific Tasks:

1. Assess residents’ technology needs and tailor support to their interests and skill levels.
2. Provide drop‑in, one‑on‑one technology assistance, answering specific questions related to phones, laptops, tablets, and basic computer use.
3. Help residents learn how to troubleshoot common issues independently.
4. Manage multiple requests by assisting residents on a first‑come, first‑served basis.
5. If offering structured workshops, coordinate with the Service Coordinator and residents to determine relevant topics.
6. Prepare engaging lessons or demonstrations on topics such as internet browsing, email, Microsoft Word, online banking, video calling, or similar tools.
7. Remain patient and supportive of residents with limited technology experience or limited English proficiency.
8. Ensure all participating residents sign the sign‑in sheet.
9. Communicate needs for materials or additional support to the Volunteer Coordinator or Service Coordinator.

Qualifications:

Physical/Age Requirements:

• Able to stand and move around the room during sessions.

Skills/Education/Experience:

• Strong general knowledge of computers, smartphones, and digital tools.
• Ability to explain technology concepts clearly and simply.
• Friendly, patient, open‑minded, and solution‑oriented.
• Prior experience teaching, training, or assisting others with technology is preferred.
• Ability to speak Chinese is helpful but not required.
